Physical and psychological consequences of homelessness • David, 27, sleeping rough • Neglect of self-care: malnutrition, poor clothing, exposure to cold, poor condition of feet etc • Vulnerable to abuse • Lack of support network • Implications of mental health problems • Verbally abusive/threatening • Distrustful • History of alcohol abuse

  3. Involvement of Multidisciplinary Team • A&E and hospital team as first point of contact • Social Services (housing/benefits issues) • Psychologist/Mental Health team (Mental Health assessment) • Podiatrist • Social Worker • Nutritionist • Occupational Therapist

Future Strategies involving MDT SHORT TERM • Addressing physical needs: housing, nutrition, problems with feet, general wellbeing and aspects of self-care • Assessment of mental health needs MEDIUM TERM • Setting up support network • Habituation • Socialising (day centres etc) LONG TERM • Learning new skills/activities to facilitate gainful employment • Ongoing input from mental health professionals • Ongoing input from social worker

  5. Other Agencies • Shelter- Experience in helping people with housing needs and/or issues. Helping people to find and keep the right home • Big Issue- Enables the homeless to earn an income through opportunities • Exeter Homeless Action Group (HAGS)- Drop-in advice centre providing information regarding resettlement support • Homeless Link- Opportunities for older homeless people under supporting people – provides many opportunities to improve housing and support services for vulnerable older homeless people
