  1. Blood sampling

  2. Skin puncture Capillary blood taken Suitable for infant or baby Suitable for RBC morphology examination No edema, congestion and cyanosis at the area to be punctured Sites of the puncture: Tip of ring or great finger, ear lobe, lateral portion of the heel or great toe
  3. Tests that can be done after skin puncture Manual CBC: Hb, Hct, WBC count, WBC differential count, RBC morphology, Plt estimation Automated CBC : Hb, Hct, WBC count, RBC count, Plt count, RBC indicies, WBC differential count, RBC morphology
  4. Venipuncture (Phlebotomy) All materials placed within easy reach Gloves worn Syringe and needle assembled to maintain sterility Needle bevel and syringe graduations face the same direction Syringe plunger pushed up and down Syringe plunger pushed completely; no air remains
  5. Applying tourniquet Tourniquet is placed under the arm above the elbow. The two end are stretched and crossed over the top of the arm. While tension is maintained on the end, one side is looped and pulled half-way through the slipknot.
  6. After the venipuncture has been completed, the tourniquet MUST be released before the needle is withdrawn from the vein, to prevent hematoma at the puncture site.
  7. Caring for the puncture site Instruct patient to press the gauze on the puncture site for 2 to 5 minutes when arm extended--> Bleeding stops, no hematoma, no swelling. Check for the bleeding again before leaving the patient. Apply bandage if necessary
  8. Procedural note Indentify patient by asking his or her name or checking armband Be sure patient’s arm is firmly supported. Do not touch the sterile area before puncture. Do not allow tourniquet to remain on the arm for more than 2 min. Always release tourniquet before removing needle. If hematoma or swelling begins to form, release tourniquet immediately, withdraw needle and apply pressure to the puncture site. Label filled tubes as soon as venipuncture is completed, and before leaving the patient.
  9. Blood taken by venipuncture For manual CBC For automated CBC Other hematological tests
