Ethical Concerns • Safety • Failure of parts - overheating • Damaged battery - leaking • Broken wall-wart wire – electric shock • Broken LCD - Hg • Reliability • “character recognition” can be misleading • Single-stroke characters are not accurate • Cannot be used on airplanes (MiWi communication)

  4. Environmental Concerns • Manufacturing and testing • PCB manufacturing – energy and materials • Batteries – chemicals • Hardware components – hazardous metals • Normal Use • Li-Ion battery on base • AA battery on pen (2000 mAh NiMh)

  5. Environmental Concerns • Disposal / Recycling • PCB, hardware components are not biodegradable • Packaging is made of plastic • Batteries represent a hazard • LCD – mercury can leak if broken
