2. הפתגמים ההולנדים (או הפלמים) ציור שמן 117X 163 ס"מ על לוח עץ אלון משנת 1559 של האמן הפלמי פיטר ברויגל האב המוצג כיום ב- Gemäldegalerie, Berlin . ביצירה נוף כפרי וסצינות של בני אדם, ובמידה פחותה, בעלי חיים ודוממים, המציעים איורים מילוליים לכ- 100 פתגמים וניבים הולנדיים. הנושאים העוברים כחוט השני ביצירותיו של ברויגל הם האבסורד, הרשעות וטיפשותם של בני אדם. יצירה זו אינה יוצאת דופן. כותרתה המקורית של היצירה: 'הגלימה הכחולה' או 'איוולתו של העולם ההפוך', הינה עדות לכך שכוונת ברויגל לא הייתה רק להמחיש את הפתגמים , אלא לקטלג בנוסף את האיוולת האנושית. רבים מן הטיפוסים שתיאר מצטיינים בתכונות אופייניות בהן השתמש ברויגל כדי לתאר טיפשים. פיטר ברויגל הבן העתיק את יצירת אביו לפחות שש עשרה פעמים. הגירסאות השונות של הפתגמים ההולנדים (יצירות האב ובנו) נבדלות זו מזו בפרטים שונים, ומציגות בין השאר גם מספר פתגמים אחרים. 3. ציורי פתגמים היו פופולריים מאד בתקופתו של ברויגל וגם קודם לכן. מאה שנים קודם זמנו של ברויגל נהגו להוסיף איורים של פתגמים בספרי שעות פלמיים (ספרי תפילה). 4. האמן הפלמי פרנס הוגנברג יצר ב-1558 בקירוב , באותו זמן בו עבד ברויגל על יצירתו הגדולה, תחריט הממחיש 43 פתגמים הולנדיים. התחריט דומה מאוד במבנהו ובמספר משלים ליצירתו של ברויגל Frans Hogenberg Die blau huicke is dit meest ghenaemt / Maer des weerelts abuisen het beter betaempt. Circa 1558.

5. ברויגל עצמו עסק בנושא פתגמים לא אחת. בין השאר ברישום דג גדול אוכל דגים קטנים, שודד הקן, משל העיוורים ותמונת שנים עשר הפתגמים. 7. אין ספק כי יצירתו של ברויגל 'הפתגמים ההולנדיים' היא היצירה הגדולה ביותר בנושא זה. מבקרי אמנות ותרבות זיהו בוודאות 112 פתגמים וניבים. ייתכן וברויגל עצמו התכוון ליותר מכך. חלקם משמשים עדיין בימינו את דוברי ההולנדית ו/או הפלמית ומוכרים גם באנגלית. אחרים נשתכחו ואף לא היו בשפות אחרות. חלקם של התרחישים שבתמונה קבלו יותר מפירוש אחד. ומכאן לפירושים אלה באנגלית ובעברית (בתרגום חופשי). To want to kill two flies with one stroke — To be efficient (equivalent to today's To kill two birds with one stone) להרוג שני זבובים במכה אחת - להרוג שתי ציפורים באבן אחת 3. It hangs like a privy over a ditch — It is obvious תלוי כמו שירותים מעל התעלה - ברור מאליו 4. It is easy to sail before the wind — If conditions are favourable it is not difficult to achieve one's goal קל לשוט בקדמת הרוח הנושבת - כשהתנאים נוחים, קל להשיג את המטרה 5.
