  1. Analysing Articles LO: To be able to answer exam style questions on an article.

  2. First things first... • What is the article ‘Sun Vampires’ about? • Sum it up in your own words, without quoting or copying sections. Make sure you include how the writer feels about the article.

  3. Who is it written for? • Where did this article get published? • THE BIG ISSUE! • What do you know about this? Is it available in shops? Who buys it? Where can you buy it? What assumptions do the publishers make about the reader? • Is there anything about how the writer speaks which says how she sees the reader?

  4. Tone! • Is the article serious and sombre or is it more light hearted and a bit funny? • Choose five quotes to prove this...

  5. Headline • What is so attractive about the headline? • Why might someone stop to look at this article?

  6. Subheading • Choose three images that the writer uses in the subheading and explain why you think she uses them. • ‘desperate for a sun fix’: • How do you feel about the word ‘tanorexic’? • Why does the writer use this word?

  7. Images • Why is the image included? Mind map your ideas. Image

  8. Opening Paragraph • Choose three words or phrases which Williams uses in the first paragraph to get the reader more personally involved, and explain how they do this:

  9. Word analysis “So who are these walking raisins and why do they need a regular sunbed fix” Which words in this phrase make it more effective and how?

  10. Now, look at Jane Horwood’s story. • What words and phrases does she use to show us that using sunbeds was like an addiction. List as many as you can. • Why does the writer include this?

  11. Now look at Doctor Julia Newton Bishop’s input... • What is her job? • Why is this important to the reader? • Why does she use JARGON such as ‘UVA and UVB rays’, ‘epidermis’, ‘elastin’ and ‘collagen’? • Why are only some of these terms explained?

  12. Word Choices • In the fourth column William talks about the suntanning “Industry”. Why is the word industry used? What are the effects? • Why are the words “Controlled tanning” and “Consultation” in inverted commas.

  13. What does Williams seek to do in the final four paragraphs, in which she gives more examples of sun bed users. This is the climax of the piece, underlining her overall message. Try to find examples of how she chooses phrases deliberately to manipulate her readers’ feelings and convince them of her point of view. • Consider for example: • “Here models and media people pop in for a top-up tan on a regular basis” • “Who says tanning isn’t trendy?” • “Secretive” • “It makes you look wealthier, like you can afford regular holidays.”
