  3. Reading & Writing Connection • Why read? Because it’s fun!! • How do we get an essay idea from a reading? • How can we write something based on what we read?

  4. Objective • Identify, experiment with, and evaluate ways to use a reading to create an idea. • Recognize the creativity involved in writing an essay.

  5. Before the read • What is personal responsibility?

  6. More before we read • Have you ever been to Japan? • Do you know anything about Okinawa, Japan.

  7. Some Vocabulary to Consider • idiotically • self-evident • seek • ludicrous • sergeant • be stationed somewhere • barracks • clarify • regretfully • amenable to something

  8. Military Psychologist • The essay we will read was written by a military psychologist. • Imagine being a military psychologist. • What kinds of problems do you think soldiers, their spouses and families would have?

  9. Read & Think • OK. It’s time to read this. As we do, consider: • How do we get an essay idea from a reading? • How can we write something based on what we read?

  10. Some other things to consider • Did you like this writing? • How did this essay end? • How was it organized? What did it do? • How do most people say to write essays? • What does a writer do?
