  4. April 19, 2012 • Kick off: Name the function of the operculum, swim bladder and pancreas • Fish dissection: Many have not turned in the lab—it will be included. Make sure you included all the parts, those who turned it in were missing major sections • Today: “Jigsaw reading” partner with someone else to read lines in the water and why do we care? Answer questions • Common fish of Puget Sound fish classification • Learning log: Which fish do you think you would recognize in the water now if you saw one?

April 17, 2012 • Kick off: What are the four types of scales and name an example of a type of fish that has that type of scale • shark and ray identification quiz, chance #3 • Fish dissection: Follow the procedure step by step. Write answers to all questions on your own paper, once labeled have me check your labels and sign off your paper. Fill in fish drawing labels • Cleanup: Wash any tools and your tray. Put fish in the biohazard bags by the sink • Learning log: Describe differences you saw today between the fish and shark dissection.

April 13, 2012 • Kick off: What are some differences between boney and cartilage fish • shark and ray identification quiz, chance #2 • Notes –Fishes • Stamps: identification cards, shark and ray color pages, fish/shark comparison chart • Use the bony fish comparison packet to create a t-chart or Venn diagram comparing and contrasting these two groups of animals • Make sure to complete the scale lab. You need to count the rings and divide by four to get the annuli. • Learning log: what are some ways you can distinguish different types of fishes

April 11, 2012 • Kick off: Look at your shark cards, what special features are you going to look for to identify each of the sharks and rays. • shark and ray identification quiz • Stamps: identification cards, shark and ray color pages, fish/shark comparison chart • Use the bony fish comparison packet to create a t-chart or Venn diagram comparing and contrasting these two groups of animals • Learning log: Describe the major differences that bony fish have to other animals we have studied so far.

April 9, 2012 • Kick off: What do you remember about sharks—what group are they in, what are their characteristics? • Continuation of shark identification cards-complete today, shark and ray identification quiz • Stamp activity: Read, highlight and color the Elasmobranch sheets, Make a T-chart on the cover that compares and contrasts sharks and rays—you will need to know the characteristics that make each unique for Wednesdays class. • Shark and ray notes • Learning log: What distinguishes rays from sharks?
