  2. Artifact – a human made object, especially from long ago

  3. Timeline – a graphic way of displaying historical events in chronological order

  4. Archaeologist – a scientist who studies the past by examining what people have left behind

  5. Physical feature – an aspect or part of the Earth’s surface such as an ocean, mountain, or desert

  6. Cardinal directions – the basic directions on the earth: north, south, east, and west

  7. Primary source – an account of an event created by a person who witnessed a historical event

  8. Secondary source – an account of a historical event written or created by someone who did not witness the event

  9. CE– common era; time period meaning the number of years since the time of Jesus; aka AD

  10. BCE – time period meaning before common era; before the birth of Jesus; aka BC

  11. Landform – naturally formed feature of the Earth’s land surface, such as an island, mountain, or plateau

  12. Climate – usual pattern of weather events in an area over a long period of time

  13. Resources – materials found on Earth that people need and value

  14. Physical Map – shows natural features (rivers, mountains, oceans, etc.)

  15. Political Map – shows boundaries (countries, states, counties, etc.)

  16. Symbols – pictures that represent things on a map

  17. Legend (Key) – tells what symbols, lines, and colors on a map mean

  18. Compass Rose – shows direction (North, South, East, and West)

  19. Scale – shows actual distance in real life

  20. Latitude and Longitude – show exact location on the Earth
