  2. Day 1 James Monroe- 5th President of the United States. Monroe Doctrine -warned European powers not to interfere with affairs in the Western Hemisphere.

  3. Day 1 Henry Clay’s American System -Clay and his supporters wanted the federal government to build new roads and canals to link the Atlantic states to the Midwest. Missouri Compromise -1820 congressional agreement that the territory of Missouri would be a slave state

  4. Day 1 Election of 1824 -Four way race between John Quincy Adams, William Crawford, Andrew Jackson, and Henry Clay in which Adams won. Election of 1828 -Andrew Jackson beat Adams with 56 percent of the popular vote and two thirds of the electoral votes.

  5. Day 2 Andrew Jackson - Seventh President of the United States from the Tennessee frontier. Used his power to veto 12 congressional acts. John Quincy Adams -Sixth President and son of John Adams.

  6. Day 2 McCulloch v. Maryland- In 1816, Congress chartered The Second Bank of the United States. In 1818, the state of Maryland passed legislation to impose taxes on the bank. James W. McCulloch, the cashier of the Baltimore branch of the bank, refused to pay the tax.

  7. Day 2 Gibbons v.Ogden -The supreme court held the power to regulate interstate commerce. Indian Removal Act - authorized the president to negotiate with Indian tribes for their removal of to federal territory west of the Mississippi River

  8. Day 2 Whigs- Political party formed in opposition to the policies of Andrew Jackson and his democratic party

  9. Day 3 John C. Calhoun -Supporter of slavery. Proponent of states’ rights, limited government,nullification, and free trade Tariff of 1828 -protective tariff passed by the Congress of the United States on May 19, 1828, designed to protect industry in the northern United States.

  10. Day 3 Corrupt Bargain -A political scandal that arose when the Speaker of the House, Henry Clay, allegedly met with John Quincy Adams before the House election to break a deadlock. Adams was elected president against the popular vote and Clay was named Secretary of State.

  11. Day 3 Spoils System-a practice where a political party, after winning an election, gives government jobs to its supporters, friends and relatives as a reward for working toward victory, and as an incentive to keep working for the party

  12. Day 3 Nullification -states could nullify,or void, any federal law deemed unconstitutional “Pet Banks”-Term for state banks selected by the U.S. Department of Treasury to receive surplus government funds in 1833.

  13. Day 4 Erie Canal -built in order to provide a water route from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes Lowell System- The Waltham-Lowell System was a labor and production model employed during the early years of the American textile industry.

  14. Day 4 Trail of Tears- name given to the forced relocation of Native American nations from southeastern parts of the United States following the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

  15. Day 4 Cherokee Nation v. Georgia-TheCherokee Nation sought a federal injunction against laws passed by the state of Georgia depriving them of rights within its boundaries

  16. Day 4 Worcester v. Georgia- case in which theUnited States Supreme Court vacated the conviction of Samuel Worcester and held that the Georgia criminal statute that prohibited non-Native Americans from being present on Native American lands without a license from the state was unconstitutional.

  17. Day 4 Compromise Tariff of 1833 -was proposed by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun as a resolution to the Nullification Crisis.
