  4. Mathematics • Course Changes • Math 106 – College Algebra (new) • Math 107 – Precalculus • Math 108 – Trigonometry (new) • Math 171 – Calculus • Placement • ALEKS • ~50% (099), ~14% (106), ~23% (107), ~9% (171) • Late Start 106 & 108 (week 5/15) • Instructor Training 

ENGR 120 - Format • 2 semester credits • Once weekly 110 minutes • 8 fall sections, 2 spring • 5-8 instructors • 2-week projects • Exploration • Inquiry • Simple design • Three Team assignments (random) • Grading: • Attendance – 10% • Pre-class reading/quizzes (online) – 10% • Individual Professional Development requirements – 10% • Peer Review - 30% • Group Reports – 40%

  6. ENGR 120 - Content • Introduction • Energy Conversion & Efficiency • Sustainability • Ethics • Gear System Efficiency • Wood beam MOR & design • Sensor Systems • Programming Concepts • Biomechanics (head/neck)

  7. ENGR 120 - Goals • Team of instructors (freshman focused) • Cross-disciplinary projects • Exploring systems (inquiry) • Designing (creativity - knowledge application) • Skill building (analytical & communication) • Informative (disciplines & challenges)

  8. 15 years… Our student will: • Gain confidence in abilities in ENGR • Desire to continue in ENGR • Awareness of the discipline • Engagement and Appreciation for ENGR • Understand the Creative nature of ENGR • NOT be “unnecessarily” discouraged • Addresses needs of late starters too… • Able to apply knowledge to solve problems • Experience “tinkering” • Develop a strong peer group • Exposed to new “messaging” • Have strong 1st year instructors • Get involved in design and/or entr teams
