  1. Fostering Youth Enterprise • Regions have the ability and opportunity to foster the creative potential of their young Citizens

  2. European Union Supporting the Lisbon Declaration the Council of European Education Ministers included entrepreneurship as one of the pillars supporting the education of young people.

  3. How do people become Entrepreneurs • by education? • due to their natural personality? • by chance? or • through opportunity?

  4. It may not be possible to develop an entrepreneur by teaching but • It is possible to develop skills for young people to become enterprising in the work domain and in the social domain

  5. From a core of enterprising young people entrepreneurs will emerge

  6. Skills and competences to be enterprising Being self reliant Being creative Capable of analytical thinking Task focused Responsible for own and others actions Ability in communication

  7. Handle conflict • Economic awareness • Getting results

  8. Procedure • An officer responsible for the scheme • A coordinator • Companies recruited • Companies appoint engineer to set problem and be a mentor • Students selected on a team basis

  9. Community Visioning • Concept is to involve a local community, through a conference, in producing a vision and from the vision develop an action plan

  10. Sustainable development • A vision without a task is but a dream • A task without a vision is drudgery • A vision and a task is the hope of the world

  11. Entrepreneurial skills and competences • Achieved by working with adult experts on a real problem with a defined need. • The challenge of working as a group to solve the problem within a time frame.

  12. Princes Trust • Young People with a business idea are interviewed by a business adviser who assists in the development of a business plan • Grant given of between 3000 and 4000 euros • Business adviser as mentor to support

  13. Success story • Last year the Princes Trust helped 3,452 young people start a new business and supported a further 6,197 • 75% first year starts continue • Over 50% still going after 4 years

  14. Fostering Young Entrepreneurs • Provide opportunities at school for work on group projects set by professionals with the support of experts. • To develop an enterprising spirit • Support those with good business plans with a personal mentor and some capital

  15. Regional Support • Use regional resources, human and financial to add value to school programmes by offering projects that are real and where solutions are needed by enterprises or the local community. Teams supported by an expert

  16. Regional Support • Provide support to young people with business ideas • Support through a programme that provides help with a business plan • And further mentoring to help client overcome problems for the first year and on demand after then
