Life facts: • On August 5, 1972, Rice lost her daughter Michelle to leukemia • In 1973, Rice turned a previously written short story into her first bestselling novel, “Interview with the Vampire” • In mid-1979, Rice, an admitted alcoholic, and her husband, Stan Rice quit drinking • On December 14, 1998, Rice went into a coma, nearly dying, and was diagnosed with Diabetes mellitus type 1 • In 2004, Rice nearly died again from an intestinal blockage or bowel obstruction, a common complication of gastric bypass surgery
