NWCCU NWCCU is the regional accreditation agency responsible for private and public colleges and universities in Oregon and six other states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Washington September 1, 2003 – Corporate Reorganization Formerly two commissions under Northwest Association of Schools and Universities (1) Commission on Colleges and Universities ; and (2) Commission on Schools

Definition Regional accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental process of self analysis and peer review that assures educational quality and encourages purposeful improvement through evaluations based on institutional mission, accepted academic standards, and expectations of the public. Definition – Standard A principle-based statement of expectation for institutional practice that concurrently functions as: (1) an indicator of educational quality and effectiveness by which institutions are evaluated; and (2) a guide for continuous improvement. Framework The [new] standards form a flexible framework of qualitative, catalytic, non-prescriptive statements that enables institutions with divergent missions, philosophies, and characteristics to exhibit essential principles of quality and effectiveness. Methodology Method consists of two correlative and complementary processes: (1) Analysis of complex totalities [communities of function/ Resources and Capacity (Standard 2)] into their parts; (2) Synthesis [communities of interest]/Core Themes and planning (Standards 1, 3, 4, and 5)] of parts into their totality. The processes alone are imperfect and require each other for full development of knowledge and understanding. Joseph L. Esposito

Definition - Core Theme A core theme is a manifestation of a fundamental aspect of institutional mission with an overarching common purpose that guides planning for programs and services, development of capacity, and application of resources to fulfill that aspect of the mission.
