  2. Cloze (not clothes) • What is a cloze test? • Close-ended task (What is that?) • Fill in the blank • Task is to complete the sentence with the correct word • Can be multiple choice or not

  3. Gestalt Psychology • Whole is greater than the sum of its parts • Mind fills in blank spaces • Idea for cloze ....(....\................../....).... \....\............ …/..../......\....\............./..../.......\..../´¯.I.¯`\./.../......./... I....I..(¯¯¯`\......I.....I....I...¯¯.\...\......I.....I´¯.I´¯.I..\...)......\.....` ¯..¯ ´.......'.......\_________.•´........l-_-_-_-_-_-.----. _..............._.----. 4. Types of Cloze • Mechanical Deletion • Every nth word is deleted • Selective • Choose which words to delete • C-Test • Finish the word • Conversational Cloze • Fill in the blanks of a conversation

  5. Let’s look at cloze • With a friend, look at and discuss the different types of cloze in the Hughes book • Pg. 188 – mechanical deletion • Pg. 190 – selective deletion • Pg. 191 – conversational cloze • Pg. 194 – mini-cloze and c-test • What’s the difference? • Do you think one is better than the other?

  6. Pros and Cons • Pros • Could be used to test types of speech such as prepositions and articles • Very easy to create and grade • Cons • Could be vague • Multiple answers • Limited

  7. Advice on creating cloze • Difficulty level • Appropriate to the ability being tested • Deletions every 8th – 10th word • Test it on native speakers • Clear instructions

  8. Create Your Own • In 5 minutes • Pick a text that matches the skill level of students from the Internet or somewhere else. • Go to: http://l.georges.online.fr/tools/cloze.html • Choose how you want to delete words (every nth word, prepositions, articles, etc.). • Play and have fun.

  9. Dictation • What is a dictation test? • Repeat after me. • Another way to test overall ability. • Ha! You just took one! We win! • A test in which the student is required to repeat or write what someone says

  10. Let’s try another one! • We will say the following two times. First time, just listen. Second time, write what we say. • Blank the projector! • Why would this be difficult to score?

  11. Types of Dictation • Regular unleaded • Write it all down • Partial • Student fills in the blanks while teacher is reading a paragraph • Mini-partial • Similar to partial but only sentences.

  12. What could you evaluate with this? • Orthography • Listening • Punctuation • Becoming a naturalized citizen of the USA

  13. Pros and Cons • Pros • Easy to create and administer • Unlike with cloze, listening ability is involved in predicting overall ability • Cons • Not easy to grade

  14. What to keep mind • Difficulty level • Test the right ability • Divide passage into stretches that will be spoken without a break • When administering, read it twice • It is acceptable to read through it all the first time and then divide it into parts the second time.
