  1. Killing Lust with the Gospel • Part 2 (Homosexuality) • Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. • 1 Corinthians 6:9-7:5

  2. 1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (ESV) 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

  3. 1 Corinthians 6:11 (ESV) 11And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Gospel changes people.

  4. Cultural View on Homosexuality • People are born gay. • If you are gay you cannot change. • If you change it won’t last. • If you do change you weren’t gay.

  5. Is Homosexuality a Choice? • Cultural View - Your born that way and did not choose it, therefore you can’t change. • Conservative View - Your not born that way, you choose it, therefore you can change. • Neither view is accurate.

  6. Sin, Desire, and the Gospel • Desire is central to ALL sin. • If desire locks us in there is no hope. • We are born with a sin nature. Ephesians 2:1 • We learn/acquire specific desires. Romans 7:7-12 • We are no longer slaves to desire. Galatians 5:16-18

  7. Gospel Hope – Objective Galatians 4:3–7 3In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

  8. Gospel Hope – Subjective Galatians 4:6-7 6And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

  9. Gospel Response • (Struggling with SSA) • Look to Jesus – Believe. • Put sin to death. • Heterosexuality is not the gospel, Jesus is. • Get help – sanctification is not a solo event. Colossians 3:12-17

  10. Gospel Response • (Loved one struggling with SSA) • Homosexuality is not the “unforgivable sin”… • Start with the Gospel. • Get help – sanctification is not a solo event. Colossians 3:12-17

  11. Gospel Response • (Church addressing Culture) • Mission is not to “fix” the sexually broken (hetero or homosexual). • Mission is introduce the sexually broken to Jesus.

  12. 1 Corinthians 6:11 (ESV) 11And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Gospel changes people.
