  2. Breakdown of Peace • During the 1930’s, Dictators were taking aggressive actions. • Other countries however, were still attempting to preserve the peace.

  3. Push Towards Expansion • Japan overruns Eastern China. • Italy invades Ethiopia. • Hitler goes against the Treaty of Versailles

  4. Hitler and the Treaty • Going against the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler began to build up the German military. • From 100,000 to 900,000 men • He also sent troops into the Rhineland bordering France which was another treaty violation. • Germany was no longer making reparation payments.

  5. Appeasement

  6. Appeasement • Haunted by the memory of World War I, many French and British officials went to great lengths in order to appease Germany to avoid war.

  7. German Aggression • Hitler wanted to pursue his goal for bringing all German-speaking people into the Third Reich. • Hitler, who believed in racial superiority, felt that Germany had a right to conquer the inferior Slavs to the east.

  8. German Aggression • Hitler annexed Austria and then moved on to take over lands in Czechoslovakia. • Munich Conference (1938): • Hitler was able to capture the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia due to appeasement from Britain and France. • After the conference, Hitler guaranteed that he had no further plans to expand his territory.

  9. German Aggression • March 1939 • Hitler breaks his promises and occupies the rest of Czechoslovakia. • European powers began to worry that Hitler’s next expansion would be towards Poland.

  10. Nazi-Soviet Pact • Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler met together in August of 1939 to sign a nonaggressive pact. • The agreement created peaceful ties between Germany and the Soviet Union. • The 2 agreed not to fight if the other went to war. • Overall, the pact was made because Hitler feared communism and Stalin feared fascism.

  11. September 1, 1939 • Invasion of Poland • 1 week after the Nazi-Soviet Pact, Hitler invaded Poland. • Within 2 days France and Britain declared war on Germany. • World War II had officially begun.
