  1. The LHC Experiments’ Joint Controls Project (JCOP) ALICE DCS Workshop 28th/29th May 2001

  2. The Joint Controls Project (JCOP) • When: Established in January ‘98 • Who: The four LHC experiments, IT-CO & EP-ESS • Mandate: “To develop a common Framework and components for detector control of the LHC experiments and to define the required long-term support.“

  3. Steering Board Sub-Projects Sub-Projects Sub-Projects JCOP Structure & Reporting CERN Technical Director Chairman = Project leader Executive Board Technical Work by Project Team http://itcowww.cern.ch/jcop/

  4. Sub-Projects - I • SCADA Acquisition • Development of Supervisory Framework • Communications with CERN infrastructure services • Applications to Interface to CERN Infrastructure • Control of Gas Systems • Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) • Front-End Communications

  5. Sub-Projects - II • Rack Control • Crate Control • Sub-detector Cooling and Ventilation • Control of High and Low Voltage • Vertical Slice • TTC (?)

  6. Status of Sub-Projects - I • SCADA Acquisition • PVSS Selected for all LHC experiments • Contract placed with ETM • Large uptake by experiments • Many courses held • Over 100 licenses generated • Support in place • http://itcowww.cern.ch/pvss2/index.htm • pvss.support@cern.ch • cern.pvss • PVSS Users’ Group

  7. Status of Sub-Projects - II • Supervisory Framework (FW) • AWG nearly finished • Guidelines released in December 2000 • First release of FW in May 2001

  8. Framework • Why? • Many common hardware devices • Similar software requirements • Avoid duplication of effort • Reduce development effort • Ensure a coherent system • Allow easy integration • Ease development • Reduce maintenance • What? • Definition of architecture design choices • Definition of a set of guidelines and conventions • Development of a comprehensive and coherent set of tools and facilities

  9. DCS Framework PVSS Libs, Panels, Scripts, etc. FSM, dB, Web DIM, etc. PVSS Core What is the Framework?

  10. Components CAEN devices: SY127, SY403, SY127, boards and channels Analogue and digital input/outputs Standard configuration panels Standard script libraries Wiener fan tray ELMB ... Tools and Utilities FSM External alarm server DIM Hierarchical modelling (following AWG’s Controls Model) Exception handling mechanism Database access Mass configuration tools Web interface …. Examples

  11. Status of Sub-Projects - III • Communications with CERN infrastructure services • LDIWG mandated by Controls Board • First Phase completed • Awaiting CB decision on how to proceed • Applications to Interface to CERN Infrastructure • Extension of FW to integrate solution recommended by LDIWG • Control of Gas Systems • URD produced with GWG • Common design for all elements • Feasibility of: • PLCs (Schneider, Siemens and WAGO) • UNICOS • Field bus enabled hardware (pumps, flow meters ..) • Gas Control Systems applications to be built in 2003/2004

  12. Status of Sub-Projects - IV • Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) • Equipment purchased and being installed • Prototype application to be demonstrated in June 2001 • Standard components including gas and HV • Front-End Communications • For commercial equipment - OPC • For custom equipment - DIM • Table to be provide on IT-CO web pages • Rack Control • Common project for mechanics, cooling and controls • Prototype built and being tested • Tender to follow • Crate Control • Common project for VME crates • Power supply controls to be specified

  13. Status of Sub-Projects - V • Sub-detector Cooling and Ventilation • Common project JCOV • Advice and recommendations on controls from JCOP • Control of High and Low Voltage SCADA • Many different HV and LV are likely to be used • Attempt to have a common controls interface • Vertical Slice • Three vertical slices set-up and being tested • Compare performances and costs
