Common Core Georgia Performance Standards • ELACC4R17: Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively • 4.W.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic. • 4.W.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. • S4CS5. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly. • D. Locate scientific information in reference books, back issues of newspapers and magazines, CD-ROMs, and computer databases.

  3. What grades is this activity appropriate for? • This activity would be appropriate for: • Students who have knowledge of simple computer skills (cut, paste, typing) • Students who can navigate the Internet (being able to search for a topic on a search database)

  4. How I have used this activity in my classroom… • Students were put into partners or groups. • Students already had a foundation of cutting, pasting, and using the Internet. • Students were given a brochure graphic organizer (on wiki) to fill out while researching.

  5. How I have used this activity in my classroom… • Students were given a topic to research and information to look for. (Ex. interesting facts, important dates, etc.) • Students filled out the information on the graphic organizer using textbooks, library books, and the Internet.

  6. How I have used this activity in my classroom… • I checked their work before allowing them to start their brochures. • Students chose their brochure template on Publisher. • Students work with their partners to import their information.

  7. How I have used this activity in my classroom… • Students are allowed to manipulate the font, size, and color of their text. • Students are encouraged to find pictures on the Internet that correspond with their research.

  8. Purpose • I use Publisher brochures to: • Teach students research skills • Introduce a new concept • Review a concept • Assess students’ learning • Accelerate students who have mastered a topic • Teach or reinforce important technology skills that will be needed for the new PARCC assessment
