  4. Why I decided to use clickers • Class size went from 28 84 • Engagement for non-majors • Make sure I wasn’t lecturing on something they understood • To check for understanding during lectures • Quizzes on readings • Case studies • Study Sessions for exams – using Jeopardy

Disadvantages and Solutions • Cost –CSUMB rents clickers for $20 due to a grant • Technology problems • Laptop vs. computer in station: Rosters • Integration of grades into CMS - ?? • Using phone for clicker – Internet connection • Crashing software – files too big?? • Getting students to register clicker – clear directions in syllabus and review every class before they need to use clickers • Students forgetting to bring clicker – after a few times of “I’m sorry” they all get it or remind them it is like coming to class without a pencil.

Advantages • Easy to set up and use – start with basic functions • Less paper for quizzes • University support – Clicker Check Day where IT comes to help with any technology issues with the clickers. They also support faculty with learning and any difficulties. • Keeps students engaged and participating – and AWAKE!
