  3. Mission Statement • To provide a service that supplements the services provided by staff, • and that supports patient, resident & client care.

  4. Some New Programs • NICU “Cuddlers” give TLC to our tiniest clients • Pre-med & Social Work students perform a variety of duties in the ER – an opportunity to both support staff & to learn • WRC Inc. provide $$ for flat screen TV’s for WRC residents who will live out their lives on ventilators

  5. Some New Programs… • Spiritual Care – select individuals with specialized skills volunteer their time as Multi-Faith Chaplains • Volunteers respond to special challenges, such as assisting with “Isolation” protocols

  6. Professionalism • Integrated Volunteer Canada’s “Safe Steps Screening Program” • Application Process/Application Form • 2 References • Criminal Record Check & Vulnerable Sector Check • Screening Interview

  7. Professionalism… • Orientation – Guidelines Booklet • Specialized Education • Site Orientation • Ongoing Education • Ongoing Program Evaluation

  8. Influenza Pandemic • “Volunteers” Steering Committee – meets monthly (volunteers & staff) • Collaboration/Partnerships • 1st Focus Group of Volunteers (September 15, 2006) – volunteer input on perceptions, concerns, what is “appropriate” information

  9. Influenza Pandemic… • “Fast-Track” Screening Protocols • Education Materials – consistent message • Ethics of what volunteers can/can’t do – clear “duty descriptions” • Scheduling Database

  10. Volunteers of the Future • “Corporate Volunteers” / “Employer-Supported Volunteers” • University placements/High School placements • Previous/current RQHR Employees • Previous/current RQHR Clients

  11. Future… • Altruistic people of all ages • Church & service club volunteers • “Family Volunteers” – helps to create a “culture of volunteering”

  12. Challenges • “Union Culture” • Competition with other organizations • Challenging & rewarding volunteer opportunities • Innovative ways of celebrating our volunteers

  13. Challenges… • Flexibility, to meet the needs of volunteers – many volunteers can volunteer only for a short time, or for only part of the year, etc.

  14. What Volunteers Want • Interesting work, that is satisfying • A sense of accomplishment, meaning & purpose from their volunteering • To be appreciated – once a year dinner is “nice”, but it is the day to day “little” thank-you’s that mean the most

  15. What Volunteers Want… • To know that staff, management, and the health authority are aware of the contributions they make
