  1. Digital Retinal Screening A Patient’s Viewpoint Steve Graham

  2. Some direct Patient Feedback –warts and all. • A Personal Journey – Would a screening service have made a difference? • Do the public support/ Value the service? • Spin-offs • Something for the future sir? Steve Graham

  3. Questionnaire • What is good / not so good? • Why do we think retinal screening is important? • Do we like the way the service is delivered? • Did you take part in the combined retinal and foot screening pilot? • Was this good? • Should we do more combined screening? Steve Graham

  4. Patients Feedback • live in Bearsden. • I have attended screening twice at Gartnavel. The patient waiting area is in effect the corridor next to the public lifts – not so good. • Retinal screening is important as it removes the subjectivity from measuring changes and it will preserve a known state allowing long-term retrospective review of deterioration perhaps linked to HBA 1C. • Service delivery is fine. • I have not. • Combined screening would be fine by me provided the appointments were reliably brief and did not involve the risk of a long wait during the working day. Steve Graham

  5. Patients Feedback • Baberton, Edinburgh • It is very good, staff are friendly and is a very efficient service, provides regular appointments and prompt information of results. • Because you wouldn't know if your eyes were affected until it was too late. Means problems can be spotted and treated quickly. • Yes • No • I think it couldn't hurt Steve Graham

  6. Patients’ Feedback •  East Kilbride  •   Distance to travel was given an appointment at time Capsule Coatbridge for my last appointment. •  Pick up any early changes in peoples eyes and help to prevent further deterioration.  • Reduce the national rate of blindness in the working age population as it is doing already and hopefully reduce further. •   OK but I also like aspects of Glasgow's mobile units. • No  •   That is the way it used to be done at Hairmyres and worked very well. Steve Graham

  7. Patients’ Feedback • Larkhall • Good Service • need to say the staff, not so good, probably the locations now they have been moved out with the hospital locations. • well its not just now its in the future when I hope to still have good enough sight to see my grand kids (not too many though). • Do you like the way the service is delivered? yes the NHS have finally got it right with diabetes, every where you go its right in your face how important this subject is. every magazine , flier and DUK website has it plastered all over.... thumbs up. • NO • I haven’t came across a joint pilot yet but it sounds like a common sense idea. Buy one get one free. Steve Graham

  8. A Personal Journey • (NOT) Diagnosed with IGT 1964 • Diagnosed Type 2 1974 • Ist Retinal Examination 1995 • 1st laser treatment (1500 + 1500) 1996 • Diagnosed Glaucoma 2000 • Maxed out on laser • 2 Trabectomies • 1 Vitrectomy • 2 Cataracts • Well would a screening service have made a difference? Steve Graham

  9. Patient & Public Support • 1997 Grampian Voluntary Group gifted £37.000 for first Camera • Patients express concern if screening appointment is late - they expect an annual check • DRS was the most popular item at patients’ education days • Of all complications loss of sight raises the most anxiety Steve Graham

  10. Lowest DNAs? • Despite discomfort and travelling difficulties after dilation Steve Graham

  11. Spin offs • Register provides best diabetes statistics • A major driver for integration of services • SCI-DC • Combined screening sessions • General eye care service redesign • Improved Patient Pathways • Screening results and images can be made available on SDG website Steve Graham
