Diseases • TB bacteria usually infect the lungs first, damaging the lungs,causing difficulty breathing and leading people to cough up blood • If it infects the kidney, it destroys tissue structure, leading to renal TB which causes kidney failure • If it infects the spine, it causes Pott’s disease, which involves curvature of the spine. This is also caused tuberculous spondylitis • If it infects the skin, it causes a red rash. This form of the disease is called lupus vulgaris. a 1590 work described it as "a malignant ulcer quickly consuming the neather parts; ... very hungry like unto a woolfe” • Scrofula is when TB infects the lymph glands of the neck. In the Middle ages in Europe, people believed scrofula could only be cured by the “touch of the King” • TB can also become disseminated throughout the whole body.
