  1. Wren High School The Power Of ICU

  2. What is the Power of I program • The “Power of I” is designed so that students must learn the curriculum standards a teacher designates as essential learning in their classroom, and demonstrate they have learned these standards at an acceptable level of mastery. • Student demonstrate their learning of these standards on “ICU assignments”, which are some form of summative assessments such as tests, projects or research papers. • Student cannot accept a “zero” on these assignments or earn lower than acceptable mastery scores (77% CP level or 70% at the tech level). If they do, they will be placed on an ICU list, remediated and re-assessed until the have scored above the minimum mastery level score.

  3. WHS Power of I Assessment Process • Each core academic teacher at the CP or Tech level determines which assessments will show mastery of the concepts/standards (ICU Assessment) • Core subjects will have 1 or 2 ICU assignments each nine weeks for at least one course (but you may and are encouraged to do more) • Students take ICU assignments (summative) • Only Mastery (Proficient) scores of 77% (4-Yr CP) / 70% ( Tech) or higher initially entered in the grade book • All scores below 77/70% entered as “Incomplete” (we use a “1”) until student retests and masters that concept.

  4. Students that did not obtain mastery are placed on the ICU master list and assigned for Re-teaching & Retesting. Once the student is remediated, re-assessed and obtains mastery, the teacher replaces the “1” in the gradebook for the student to a 70/77 %. The new score and date of completion are entered in the master list, and the record for that student is moved from the master ICU list to the completed ICU list.

  5. If at the end of the year, the student still has not mastered an ICU test / concept / objective the student will be required to attend extended school year to reach mastery OR be denied credit in the course.

  6. How can students be re-assessed? • Students can be given an entirely new test to re-take • Students can take a new test only on those skills they missed on the first test. • Students can make corrections on the problems they missed on the first assessment. • Students can complete the assessment they refused or failed to take in the first place. • Alternate assignments or assessments that demonstate to the teacher that the learning standards of the ICU assignment have been met at an acceptable level of mastery.

  7. Who can do the re-testing and the re-teaching? • The original teacher (the teacher of origin ) • The tutoring teachers and student tutors in the Academic Subject tutoring rooms. • Ms. Motte and/or Ms. Tripp using the Novanet computer system

  8. Important materials for the ICU process • The ICU tutoring slip • The ICU folder • The ICU tutoring room file box • The Master ICU list

  9. Other important ICU documents • ICU tutoring room schedule • ICU student tutor list • This powerpoint presentation • Bus Passes All documents pertaining to ICU can be found under the drive teachers/ICU 2012-2013/

  10. Why do we need a Master ICU list • Aid the teacher in scheduling students without overlap • Allow us to collect data to determine whether the ICU program is allowing the students and the school to meet important informational benchmarks. • To aid Mr. Brocket when speaking with parents. • To allow teacher to see where students are in the ICU process at all times • It will provide a database that can be sent to ALL teachers and coaches so we can all try to communicate with the students that are not completing their work or not doing well.

  11. When a teacher assigns a student to ICU, the teacher must put them on the master ICU list. The first 8 columns need to be filled in initially. They are Last Name Ex. Doe First Name Ex. John Subject Ex. Math Tech 2 Teacher Ex. Hanks Assignment Ex. Ch. 1 Test Tutoring Date Ex. 9/1/12 How they will be tutored Put Self, Tutor room, or Novanet

  12. When students have finished an ICU assessment, teachers should complete the 7th and 8th column on the master ICU list and return the completed ICU sheet to Mr. Brocket New Score Ex. 86 (not the gradebook score) Date of completion Ex. 9/12/12 Return the ICU slip to Mr. Brocket when complete.

  13. Directions for teachers performing their own tutoring for ICU • Enter a “1” into the gradebook for the assignment not mastered. • Make an ICU tutoring slip for the student, keep it and schedule their tutoring/re-assessment. • Remediate the student and re-assess. • Continue the remediation.re-assessment until the student obtains mastery. Once the student has obtained mastery, replace the “1” in the gradebook with the new grade and notate this was an ICU grade replacement in teacher comments section of your gradebook. • Complete the ICU tutoring slip showing the new score, number of attempts, and the date of completion. Put the ICU slip in Mr. Brocket’s mailbox to enter the information into the ICU completion list. (For those that are giving more than 1-2 ICU assignments per nine weeks, you will need to type the completion date and score into the master ICU list yourself as well.)

  14. Directions for teachers using Novanet for ICU • Enter a “1” into the gradebook for the assignment not mastered. • Make an ICU slip and folder for the student, stating which Novanet unit or sections of a Novanet unit a student needs to recover. Teachers should also specify the amount of time the student is allowed to complete their Novanet work on the ICU sheet before an intervention takes place (call home by me or referral to an administrator) • Teacher enters the appropriate information into the master ICU list. • Teacher places the folder in the Novanet tutoring file box, located in the Novanet tutoring room, for the appropriate day. • Ms. Tripp or Ms. Motte assigns the appropriate modules and testing material.

  15. Directions for teachers using Novanet for ICU (continued) • Once student completes the work, Ms. Tripp or Ms. Motte will return the folder to the teacher of origin with the new grade. • Teacher will change the “1” in the gradebook to the new grade (70 or 77%) • Teacher will input the new grade and completion date into the Master ICU list. • Teacher will send the completed ICU tutoring slip to Mr. Brocket to file for school records and save the folder to be used at a future time.

  16. Directions for teachers using Tutoring rooms for ICU • Enter a “1” into the gradebook for the assignment not mastered. • Fill in the top portion of the ICU tutoring slip with detailed directions for the tutoring teachers/students to follow in order to remediate/re-test the student. Teacher also fills in the initial tutoring date in the first row of the tutoring log. • Teacher enters the appropriate information into the Master ICU list. • Teacher creates an ICU folder for the student that contains the tutoring slip on top, remediation material, and the new assessment. • Teacher places the folder in the appropriate subject area tutoring box in the appropriate day folder. The subject area tutoring boxes are located in the Freshman Academy Workroom.

  17. Once the folder reaches the tutoring room, then … • The student can show up for tutoring, but not complete all of the work • The student can show up for tutoring and complete all of the work • The student does not show up for tutoring

  18. If the student shows but does not complete their tutoring… • The teacher in the tutoring room will document on the tutoring log what the student completed, re-assign a new tutoring and write it on the next line of the tutoring log, place all student work back in the folder, and move the ICU folder to the next applicable day folder.

  19. If the student completes their tutoring. • The teacher will document on the tutoring slip the student has completed the re-assessment. • The teacher will put the student’s ICU folder in the green “Complete” in the tutoring file box. • Mr. Brocket will deliver the student ICU folder for the teacher to grade

  20. If the student makes an acceptable score on the re-assessment. • The teacher will document the new score on the bottom of the ICU tutoring slip. • The teacher will change the student’s score in the gradebook from a 1 to a 70/77% • The teacher will enter the new assessment score and completion date on the master ICU list. • The teacher will put the Master ICU list in Mr. Brocket’s mailbox.

  21. If the student does not make an acceptable score on the re-test. • The teacher will write the new score on the bottom of the ICU slip under 2nd attempt. • Using the same ICU slip, the teacher will determine where and how the student will receive remediation/reassessment again and start the process again.

  22. If the student does not show up for tutoring … • The teacher tutor documents this on the appropriate line of the tutoring log. • The teacher puts the student’s ICU folder in the red “No show” folder for Mr. Brocket to contact the parent and student to reschedule. • Mr. Brocket conferences with the students and the parent over the phone and assigns a new tutoring date. • Mr. Brocket records this information in the Master ICU list and on the students tutoring slip. • Mr. Brocket returns the student folder back to the ICU file box into the folder for the appropriate date.

  23. Consequences for not showing up to ICU tutoring in the tutoring rooms • 1st no show – Phone call to parent • 2nd no show – Conference with Parents by an administrator • 3rd no show- Student is sent to ISS until they have completed all ICU work

  24. Important reminders to help the process work • Whether it’s the student’s teacher or the teacher tutor, fill out the ICU slip completely and correctly. • A student that wants to re-schedule tutoring using the tutoring rooms must see me 24 hours in advance. Students cannot re-schedule at the tutoring rooms the same day. They will be considered a no-show • Please schedule ICU tutoring at least 24 hours after speaking with the student about it.

  25. Important reminders to help the process work (cont.) • Please place ICU folder in the correct day ICU file. • Please remember to fill in appropriate spots of the ICU list before remediating/re-teaching is scheduled and after it is completed. • Please give students a copy of your ICU policies and have parents sign and return them. • Please post you ICU policies on your School’s website.
