Seven (7) Laws of Personal growth

Nine (9) Qualities of Winning Teams:

  • 1. Sense of purpose (clear & unequivocal)

  • 2. Talent (recruit & retain the best)

  • 3. Leadership (organizational & personal)

  • 4. Strategy (clarity, ownership, position/role)

  • 5. Feedback (honestly give & receive)

  • 6. Confidence (self, leadership, teammates)

  • 7.Chemistry (“right people on…the bus”)

  • 8. Identity (sense of pride in self & organization)

  • 9. Commitment (people, process and results)

  • Story: “The Crack on the 42nd Floor”

  • So….what represents a foundational issue in the context of a team?

  • The need to establish…TRUST

FIVE (5) DYSFUNCTIONS OF A TEAM

  • 1. The Absence of Trust

  • 2. The Fear of Conflict

  • 3. The Lack of Commitment

  • 4. The Avoidance of Accountability

  • 5. The Inattention to Results

  • So….what is it that causes people to trust the leader?

  • Four (4) C’s:

  • Character

  • Commitment

  • Competence

  • Consistency

The Law of Buy-in

  • “People buy into the leader before they buy-in to his/her leadership.”

  • YOU…

  • Remember: “The Goose who laid the Golden Eggs”

A truth….

  • “People are anxious to improve their circumstances but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.” – James Allen

The Law of Intentionality

  • Growing older is a function of nature; getting better is a function of intention.

  • The Law of Diminishing Intent: “the longer you wait to do something you should do now, the greater the odds that you will never actually do it.”

  • “No wind favors (the person) who has no destined port” – Michel de Montaigne

  • “Life lived tomorrow will always be a day away from being realized.”

The Law of Awareness

  • You must know (and be honest with) yourself to grow yourself

  • “Know thyself.” – W. Shakespeare

Four (4) Kinds of people…

  • Confused – lacks direction

  • Complacent - settles

  • Frustrated - fearful

  • Fulfilled – knows purpose & passion

Five (5) Important Questions:

  • 1. What do you want?

  • 2. Why do you want it?

  • 3. Why don’t you have it?

  • 4. When do you want it?

  • 5. What are you willing to do to get it?

Make it personal…..

  • “What are the three (3) greatest areas of unrealized potential in your life?”

  • “What areas of my life require greater focus, discipline, restraint or persistence?

  • D + D + D + A = Success

The Law of Pain

  • “Good management of bad experiences leads to great growth.”

  • E + R = O

  • We are made in the P.R.O.C.E.S.S

Consider this:

  • Your level of skill/mastery is revealed by the level of obstacle that you overcome.

  • “Every obstacle introduces a person to himself.” - Mike Murdock

The Law of the Rubber Band

  • “Growth stops when you lose the tension between where you are and where you could be”

  • CZ = RZ

The Law of Persistence

  • Your ability to persist in the face of inevitable setbacks and circumstances is the measure of your belief in yourself, and your ability to succeed.

The Law of Trade-Offs

  • You have to give up to grow up

  • “People cling to an unsatisfactory way of life rather than change in order to get something better for fear of getting something worse.” – Eric Hoffer

  • “Your next level of excellence is hidden…”

The Law of Environment

  • “Growth thrives in conducive surroundings”

  • “A big step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment you first find yourself in”

  • “You will think at the level of your exposure”

Consider…..

  • What if your current challenge is a call to action, a rallying cry, that will prepare you for the next phase/level?

When it’s all said and done…

  • The Law of the Lid remains inviolate!

  • “Success requires no explanations – Failure permits no alibis”

  • “What are you prepared to do?”Sean Connery as “Jim Malone” – The Untouchables
