LANDFORMS. Mountain. A high area of land with steep sides and a sharp peak. Hill. A raised part of the earth’s surface that is lower than a mountain. Valley. An area of low land between mountains or hills. Basin. A large or small depression in the surface of the land or in the ocean floor.

  2. Mountain • A high area of land with steep sides and a sharp peak

  3. Hill • A raised part of the earth’s surface that is lower than a mountain

  4. Valley • An area of low land between mountains or hills

  5. Basin • A large or small depression in the surface of the land or in the ocean floor

  6. Plain • A large, low area of flat or rolling land with few trees

  7. Plateau • A flat area of land that is higher than the land around it.

  8. Butte • An isolated hill or mountain with steep or precipitous sides usually having a smaller summit area than a mesa

  9. Swamp • A wetland often partially or intermittently covered with water

  10. Desert • Arid, dry land with usually sparse vegetation; it has sporadic rainfall annually

  11. Delta • A low, watery land formed at the mouth of a river. It is formed from the silt, sand, and small rocks that flow downstream in the river from erosion.

  12. Cape • A point or extension of land jutting out into water as a peninsula or as a projecting point

  13. Canyon • A deep gorge between cliffs that is often carved by a river.

  14. Cave • A natural underground space usually carved out by underground rivers.

  15. Stalactite • A natural limestone formation growing from the ceiling downward.

  16. Stalagmite • A natural limestone outcropping that grows from the floor of a cave upward

  17. Sedimentary Rock Rock that has been formed in layers over millions of years through compression and extreme pressure.
