  2. Newton’s First Law In the absence of unbalanced forces, the momentum of an object will be constant.

  6. Conservation of momentum helped scientists discover the neutrino. In the 1920s it was observed that in a beta decay, a nucleus emitted a beta particle. However, when the nucleus recoiled, it was not in the opposite direction to the emitted electron. Thus, the momentum of these particles did not comply with the law of conservation of momentum. In 1930 Wolfgang Pauli determined that another particle must also have been emitted. This particle, the neutrino, was not detected experimentally until 1956.
