  2. Introduction • Yankee Doodle was originally sung by the British military officers to tease the colonists. • But the Americans took that as an insult and turned it around, and then Yankee doddle became a patriotic song.

  3. Fact #1 • The tune for “Yankee Doodle” was from an American nursery rhyme, “Lucy Locket.”

  4. Fact #2 • In this song, “macaroni” is not referring to pasta. • Macaroni was a well-known term to describe fancy clothing that the British would wear to special occasions. • Macaroni is also known as fops, popinjays, or dandies.

  5. Fact #3 • The term “doodle” first appeared in the early 17th century and comes from the low German dudel, meaning “fool” or “simpleton.”
