  1. Project MORE A District-Wide Approach at Tipp City Schools

  2. Project MORE has made an IMPACT K-12 ! -65 students served ranging from elem. to HS -86 mentors building student skills & forming relationships -Students looked forward to their time spent with their mentor

  3. -Students benefited from the 1-on-1 approach -Students formed wonderful relationships with their mentors

  4. THE IMPORTANCE OF FLUENCY • Speed—standard reading rate • Proper pause and expression • Allows kids to focus on getting meaning from text Fluent readers automatically recognize words accurately and effortlessly. Fluent readers group words into phrases and chunks as they read with expression and fluidity.

  5. COMPREHENSION • Understanding what is read -Questioning -Predicting -Visualizing -Retelling and summarizing -Connections to life, other texts, prior knowledge

  6. Recruiting Mentors • Quick News Local Newspaper • Building School Newsletters • Mentors sharing their experience w/others • Board Meeting Notes & Updates • Utilizing our students -MS -HS • Utilizing our own staff

  7. Tippecanoe High School • 12 students • 7 students began 2011-2012 school year and continued 2012-2013 school year • 7 Mentors(staff - adult community members -student mentors) • Good student response • - motivated by charting progress • - strived to improve data

  8. How it works at the high school: • Grades 9-12 • CD, SLD, MD and Autistic • Complete Project MORE during English class or Tutoring period • Students in Project MORE during a Tutoring period receive credit • High school student mentors mentoring during the school day receive credit

  9. Adaptations for high school: • Very selective with mentors • Use different “Getting to Know You” activities • See “Would You Rather” and “Getting to Know You” handouts • No game boards • Selective with books • Make new books for levels

  12. High School Success • Student passed 4/5 OGT tests – passed Reading portion • Accepted to vocational school in mainstream program • Personal story by the mentor

  16. Tippecanoe Middle School “This is my second year in project MORE, and my favorite thing about it is working one on one with really nice mentors. Reading has always been hard for me, but with Project MORE I know I’m getting better. I even like to read more now. Project MORE at LT Ball (4th and 5th grade) • LTB Intermediate -11 students - 21 mentors (mix of parents, grandparents, college student, middle school students, high school students, and a few teachers) • Students participated in Project MORE at the end of the school day during “breakout time.”

  19. LT Ball Success Stories • 4th grader increased 4 Project MORE reading levels. “Study Island” Benchmark score increased 158 points from the fall. DRA score increased from a 12 to a 24 • 5th grader increased 4 Project MORE levels. DRA increased from a 18 to a 30-.

  20. LT Ball Success Stories HUGE success story : Student began 4th grade with a 1.8 reading level and is now ending 5th grade reading ABOVE grade level. …All because of Project MORE!

District-wide Mentor Appreciation • Lapel pins for mentors (pewter book pin) • Thank you cards • Dairy Queen gift cards for student mentors • Ice cream sundae party for student mentors • Holiday “treats” • Certificates • End of Year Thank You celebration with cake, punch, and a slideshow with progress.

  25. Zach-8thGrd. Student Mentor: By helping Danny, it taught me to be more responsible. I think it helps the student learn more since the information is coming from a person around their age. This is a good program and it should be used by more schools!
