  2. Mayerly Sanchez lives in Colombia. She dedicates most of her time teaching children about peace.

  3. Colombia is a very violent place to live in. It consists of gangs, drug dealers and murders occur on a daily basis. The homicide rate in Colombia is 15 times greater then that in the United States.

  4. Where is Colombia?

  5. When Mayerly was 12 her close friend Milton was stabbed to death in a gang fight. This tragic event made Sanchez realise that violence needed to stop in Colombia.

  6. Moved by the death of Milton, Mayerly established the Colombian Children’s Movement for Peace at the age of 12. Mayerly’s movement is about providing children with the resources to promote non violence to their peers.

  7. Mayerly is also involved with World Vision’s peace building program.

  8. She and her team visit schools and talk to children about peace. A range of games are played to reinforce the message.

  9. Mayerly is extremely busy. As a leader of a peace movement she carries a number of responsibilities…

  10. These include:- discussing legislation with the Colombian government - leading and coordinating conferences-organizing rallies- lobbying officials

  11. Mayerly also works as a volunteer on projects sponsored by World Vision.One project Mayerly has worked onis the Centro Nazareno San Mateo, a project which encourages peace by helping families.

  12. But what about me, Could I be like Mayerley?

  13. Mayerly is not only a leader and volunteer but she is also a student, friend and a daughter.

  14. Mayerly also has homework,

  15. and household duties that she needs to complete. Luckily for her, her family is very supportive and proud of her. Mayerly’s mother states, “ I feel proud of Mayerly… She has gone to other countries to speak about peace.”

  16. At the end of the day Mayerly is just like us. She is an ordinary kid, who stood up and spoke out for others.

  17. Mayerly and her peace movement have gained much support throughout Colombia. As a result of her hard work, her movement has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.

  18. Mayerly has had a very busy but successful life. In 2001, Mayerly traveled to Sweden as a representative of the Peace Builders Network, to receive third prize at the World Children’s Prize.

  19. In 2000, Mayerly represented World Vision at the ceremony ‘Remember the Children’ to commemorate the attacks against the Twin Towers and the Pentagon in the U.S.- Mayerly has also attended the United Nations Special Session on Children. She was one of the World Vision and Peace Constructors Movement delegates. - Mayerly was also involved with the United Nations Conference in Panama known as: Voices of the Poor.

  20. Mayerly says “no to war, yes to peace. We the children are going to achieve it! Adults have to forgive like children do. If we have peace in our hearts, we can provide it to others.”

  21. She has proved to Colombia and to the rest of the world that young people can make a real difference in the world. Her courage has inspired other children to follow in her footsteps.

  22. Today, Mayerly is studying journalism. She vows that she will continue to participate in the movement she so strongly believes in.

  23. Through the Children’s Peace movement, children in Colombia are working for peace and an end to violence in their country.

  24. What about us? What can we do for peace?
