Which ones are you using? Enterprise Skills LESSON OBJECTIVES Always aim high! We are learning to: • Enhance our Mathematical learning skills. (Which Enterprise skills?) • Accurately find a stratified sample from a table. (Grade A) AUTHOR www.mistrymaths.co.uk

  3. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen BRAIN IN GEAR Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using? EXAMPLE DITDIONA can be rearranged to make ADDITION TASK Work out the following Mathematical anagrams: Random Systematic Sampling EXTENSION Develop your own Mathematical anagrams as above as a creative entrepreneur.

TASK x4 x5 - Work out: 4 - 4 x 3 2) 1) Expand 5(2x + 9y) 3) 3 1 x4 x5 = 10x + 45y 5 4 15 4 = 4 - 12 = - 8 4(3 + g) + 3(3 + 2g) Round 8.84 to 1d.p. 0 4) Calculate 7 Find the LCM of 4 and 5 5) 6) = 1 = 20 = 8.8 Solve: 7(x - 2) = 14 Simplify: 5y + 6g – 6y – 3g 9) 16% of 300km 7) 8) 10% = 30km 5% = 15km = 14 7x - 14 = 3g - y 1% = 3km + 14 + 14 16% = 48km 7x = 28 ÷ 7 ÷ 7 EXTENSION x = 4 Expand and simplify: 9 + 6g = 12 + 4g + = 10g + 21

  5. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen STRATIFIED SAMPLING Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using? DIFFERENT SAMPLING TECHNIQUES Listed below are the 3 main methods of sampling. Explain in your own words what you think each one is. RANDOM SAMPLING SYSTEMATIC SAMPLING STRATIFIED SAMPLING

  6. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen STRATIFIED SAMPLING Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using? EXAMPLE (a) Jo wants to choose 10 children from a group of 100 children. She puts all their names in a hat and picks out 10 names. Write down the type of sampling method Jo is using. Random Sampling (1 mark) (b) A children’s athletic club has 300 members. The table shows the number of members in each age group. Total = 300 Ciaran wants a stratified sample of 25 members. Calculate the number of members that he should choose from each age group. Under 11yrs = 4 = 3.75 x 25 Under 11yrs = 11 - 12yrs = 6 Sample must be whole numbers and add to make 25 = 6.5 x 25 11 - 12yrs = = 8 x 25 13 - 14yrs = 13 - 14yrs = 8 = 6.75 x 25 15yrs and over = 15yrs and over = 7 (3 marks)

  7. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen STRATIFIED SAMPLING Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using? TASK (GRADE A) 1) TOTAL = 591 Year 11s = Year 11s for sample = 32 = 32.0 x 150 2)

  8. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen STRATIFIED SAMPLING Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using? TASK (GRADE A) 3) 4)

  9. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen STRATIFIED SAMPLING Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using? EXTENSION EXAM QUESTION (GRADE A) 1) The government wants to survey students studying science at University about their views on becoming teachers. They decide to survey science students at Surrey University.2371 students do science at Surrey University. The cumulative percentage table of students doing each science is: (a) The government decide to do a 10% stratified sample. Write down the numbers from each category that they should sample. (3 marks) (b) Give one other factor they should take into account when selecting the sample to ensure an unbiased sample. (1 mark)

  10. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen • LINK BACK TO OBJECTIVES • Accurately find a stratified sample from a table. What grade are we working at? DISCOVERY Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using?

  11. Team Worker Positive Thinker Creative Entrepreneur Independent Learner Reflective Learner Responsible Citizen STRATIFIED SAMPLING Enterprise Skills Which ones are you using? The table shows the number of people in each age group who watched a synchronised swimming event. PLENARY ACTIVITY – CROSS CURRICULAR (OLYMPICS) Total = 900 A survey uses a stratified sample of 50 spectators. Work out the number from each age group in the sample. = 4.8 0 - 16yrs = 0 - 16yrs = 5 x 50 = 6.8 x 50 17 - 29yrs = 17 - 29yrs = 7 = 20.2 x 50 30 - 44yrs = 30 - 44yrs = 20 Sample must be whole numbers and add to make 50 = 15.2 x 50 45 - 59yrs = 45 - 59yrs = 15 = 2.9 x 50 60+yrs = 45 - 59yrs = 3

  12. What grade are we working at? Where are we in our journey? What have you learnt? Draw your brain In your brain, write or draw everything you can remember about stratified sampling. It can be a skill or a reflection, or something else that might be prominent in your brain.
