Notes: Bystander Effect • Copy the notes that are blue. • Bystander Effect • individuals do not offer help in an emergency when others are around • Break it down: • The more people that witness an emergency, such as a mugging, someone falling down, a fire, etc., the less likely it is that anyone will do anything about it • Note: A by-stander is someone who is present for something

Notes: Bystander Effect • Bystander Intervention Model – the steps that have to occur before someone helps out • 1) Notice the incident • 2) Interpret it as an emergency • 3) Assume responsibility*** • 4) Attempt to help • When others are present, people are less likely to assume responsibility. They think “oh, someone else already took care of it” or “someone else is better qualified” or “surely, one of these people will do something.” However, if EVERYONE thinks that…

Notes: Bystander Effect • Factors that influence people’s willingness to help • Uncertainty – unclear situation < clear-cut emergency • Possible cost – being late, not having your belongings returned, etc. • Diffusion of responsibility*** - alone > crowded • Similarity – similar to you > different • Mood – happy > sad/angry • Gender – women > men • Cause – innocent > brought it on themselves • Social Norms – elderly, mothers, donations in front of people > getting an e-mail
