  5. Point 4 • MAN OF THE PEOPLE • ‘hnagxasmai” – ‘compelled’ by the circumstances to prosecute Eratosthenes • This shows that he believes he is a member of the city and wants to protect it from the Thirty.

  6. Point 5 • GENEROUS • “pollous… polemwn lusamenous” – ‘and having ransomed many Athenians from the enemies’

  7. Point 6 • VICTIMS • ‘apollumai” - ‘I am destroyed’ – passive verb shows his lack of action – he is purely being persecuted

  8. Point 7 • WELL CONNECTED • “oumos pater… perikleous… aphikesthai” – ‘my father Kephalos was persuaded to come to this land by Pericles’

  9. Point 8 • UNFORTUNATE • “alla outws… exemartanon” – ‘but thus they did wrong to us because of our money’ • This shows that they have been wronged despite having done nothing wrong themselves and are being persecuted for their money.

  10. Point 9 • DESPERATE • “moi kinduneuein edokei, wj .. Apoqanein uparxontoj” ‘I decided to chance it, as death was already inevitable’ – this shows how close Lysias comes to dying at this point. • SYMPATHY

  11. Point 10 • POPULAR • ‘kai eme xenous… katelabon’ – and they surprised me whilst I was entertaining guests’
