  1. BELLRINGER: Layer 1 - Layer 2 - Layer 3 - Layer 4 - Layer 5 - Layer 6 – What characteristic /physical property divides each main layer? Lesson Essential Question: How does each layer of the atmosphere benefit the Earth?

  2. Today's Activities: • Go over bellringer • Science Challenge Questions • Complete constructing Support activity • Watch BrainPop • Atmosphere Graphic Organizer • (Check LEQs)

  3. TROPOSPHERE • Tropo means “turning” or “changing”. • Contains most of the atmosphere’s mass. • The weather forms here. • Planes, balloons, and birds fly here.

  4. STRATOSPHERE • Strato means “layer” or “spread out”. • Contains the ozone layer. • Second layer

  5. Ozone Layer • Ozone = a form of oxygen that contains three oxygen atoms in each molecule instead of two. • Ozone converts the sun’s energy to heat, warming the Earth. • Protects Earth from dangerous ultraviolet rays.

  6. MESOSPHERE • Meso means “middle”. • Protects Earth’s surface from being hit by meteoroids and other material from space by burning them up upon entry.

  7. THERMOSPHERE • Thermo means “heat”. • Hottest layer because sunlight strikes it first. • Extends into space, no outer limit. • Broken into two sub layers: ionosphere and exosphere.

  8. IONOSPHERE • Energy from the sun causes gas molecules to become electrically charged particles called ions. • These ions strike atoms in our atmosphere causing the atoms to glow creating the Northern Lights.

  9. EXOSPHERE • The outermost layer of the thermosphere. • Extends into space. • Satellites orbit in this layer.

  10. Science Challenge Question

  11. Science Challenge Question

  12. Science Challenge Question

  13. Constructing Support • Construct support for why your assigned layer serves an important role in the atmosphere, or why it’s beneficial to Earth.

  14. Homework: Monday, November 3, 2014 None

  15. Walk and Freeze • Walk around the room. When your teacher prompts you, stop moving and freeze. • Whomever you are standing next to, share something you learned today about the layers of the atmosphere with them. • You cannot repeat the same idea.
