  3. The Core Six The Core Six is a collection of proven research-based strategies that will help teachers and students respond to the demands of the Common Core.

Introduction This book is not… But it is… • This book is not a guide to the Common Core State Standards. • This book is for educators who already have a strong grasp on the CCSS and are eager to do something about it. • This book is for teachers who teach English Language Arts • Also for Content Area Classroom Teachers

  6. Figure 1.1 This describes each of the six strategies offered in this book and highlights some of the Common Core skills that each strategy builds.

  7. Why The Core Six Works… • Page 2 says, • “There is a real gap between research and practice, and any strategy can fall flat in the classroom.” • Think about a time this has happened to you…

  8. “If you want to get results, you need to treat Compare & Contrast as learning strategy rather than an end-of-learning assessment.”

  9. Reading for MeaningLooking Closer • Reading for Meaning helps students develop the skills that proficient readers use to make sense of rigorous texts. The strategy helps build these Common Core skills: • Managing text complexity. • Evaluating and using evidence • Developing the core skills of reading (find main ideas, making inferences, and analyzing characters and content).

More Specific to the CCSS… • Reading Anchor 10, Appendix A in ELA Standards: Managing text complexity • Reading Anchors 1 & 8, Writing Anchors 1 & 9: Evaluating and using evidence • Reading Anchor Standard 2: Developing the core skills of reading, including determining main ideas • Reading Anchor Standard 3: Analyzing characters and ideas

  11. Reading Anchor Standard 4: Interpreting Meaning • Reading Anchor Standard 6: Assessing Point of view • Reading Anchor Standard 7: Interpreting visual and quantitative information • Mathematical Practices 1, 2, 3 and 7: Reading, interpreting and solving complex mathematical problems

Example • Text: From Scholastic Action Magazine • Up Close With The World’s Biggest Snake Hook: High-interest video CCSS Standard One: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

Planning & Implementation • Planning Considerations can be found on page 13. • In a 6th grade social studies class, Mrs. Trahan addressing the following standards: • Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources. ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.1 • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to History/Social Studies. ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.4 Text: Swallowed by a Whale Task: Create 3-5 statements based on the text and standards

  15. Other ideas Newsela • Statements can be the same for multiple groups • Change the lexiles • High-Interest Articles • Hook with YouTube video • Extension • Create a learning station where kids choose articles and find statements for others to collect evidence for or against.
