General Information In order to ensure the safety of students and staff, Chapman Middle School, please read and familiarize yourself with the information contained in this booklet fully before emergencies arise. Disaster Drills Planning for emergencies includes practice drills. It is extremely important that the drills be carried out in a highly controlled manner so that the individuals are prepared to function under emergency conditions. In order to assure everyone’s safety, students must not speak to one another during drills so that all can hear directions given by school staff.

Tornado During WARNING, students will go to designated areas Students will sit turtle style on floor, facing wall, with book or coat covering their head CLOSE CLASSROOM DOOR (make sure windows are shut) Teachers should take emergency bags with them to designated areas Students are not to be released to parent except in the office – students will be called to the office by 2-way radio or intercom Report students that are unaccounted for to the office All TV’s and radios will remain off, except for in the office All clear signal will be announced from the office Ice / Snow Storms If early dismissal is called for, normal dismissal procedures will be followed as much as possible Teachers will stay with their students until they have been picked up No student will be allowed to walk home

Bomb Threat All threats must be taken seriously When bomb threat is received, students will evacuate the building using fire drill procedures Staff members will do visual checks of the classrooms, but WILL NOT TOUCH ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS Cell phones will not be used during a bomb threat Students will be evacuated to 300 feet from the building – moved to Off Campus Evacuation Site. All doors and windows will be closed as you leave Teachers will carry their emergency bags with them Students are not to leave campus unless checked out by parent / guardian and this is noted on the class emergency roster

Intruder / Lockdown The intercom will be used to inform teachers to lock all doors The code message will be “Intruder Alert” Repeat…… Teachers will immediately lock their doors, close windows, pull shades Students will be moved to the least visible area of the room Everyone who is outside of the building will take cover in the safest location at the time of the “Intruder Alert” (ie. Band or Choral Rooms, take safest route to Off Campus Evacuation Site. Teachers will remain with students until further instructions Do not open the door to anyone. A known staff member or police officer will unlock the door and enter to give the “All Clear”. When performing a drill, an “All Clear” may be given over the intercom

    8. Medical Emergency In case of emergency, the nearest staff member will take charge until the principal/assistant principal or trained individual arrives The principal will notify family members and take actions according to their wishes If parents cannot be reached, the principal will make the decision if emergency personnel should be called An accident form will be submitted to the Safety Office (Kyle Koski) Coach Lassie, Speer, Winston, and Cummings are CPR/AED certified. Use AED if necessary and available Gas Leak / Utility Emergency The intercom will be used to evacuate students in the established manner Huntsville Utilities will be contacted Security will be notified (428-8355), also the Superintendents’ office The principal will determine if off campus evacuation procedures should be implemented

Field Trips / Bus Wrecks Students will wear name tags A roster of all persons on the bus will be left with school personnel A roster will be kept on the bus by the teacher Durham Bus Services will contact the transportation supervisor - 428-8352 Teachers will remain with students Security will notify the Emergency Coordinator - 428-8350

    10. Weapons / Shootings Go Into Lockdown Procedure If shooting occurs on campus, notify office immediately Principal will notify Police, security, superintendent’s office Do not move victim, give CPR if trained and necessary Do not touch anything in the crime area, evacuate area If weapon is found, immediately call office Evacuate other students away from weapon

    11. School Crisis Team Members Director of School Crisis Management Team Dr. James Waters, Principal Dr. Sheila Jones, Assistant Principal Notify appropriate emergency agencies Support response efforts as directed by Superintendent and coordinate all activities, plans and decisions with central office emergency coordinator Maintain command center to follow procedures as outlined in the school safety plan; communicate regularly with crisis team members Act as official spokesperson at the building site Disseminates safety plan to all stakeholders and provides ongoing orientation and training for the plan Staff and Parent Liaison Dionetta Lee, Counselor Jennifer Bradley, Counselor Coordinates staff members’ assignments during crisis Contact point for parents Maintain parent room as designated Provide individual and group counseling Participates in debriefing / recovery activities

    12. Communication Leader Marcie Stewart, Secretary Jennifer Lovett, Clerical Assistant Monica Jones, System Operator Maintains communication lines, i.e., phone, intercom, cell phones, 2-way radios Liaison with Media Liaison to feeder schools Maintains student database during crisis Assists principal as directed Triage / Medical Area Franco Cavo, Nurse Christy Lassie Tenisha Cummings Leldon Speer Reginald Winston Gary Shelby Responsible for dispensing and managing medication Responsible for assigning contact to hospital Assists with initial first aid and triage efforts Use CPR/AED if necessary: All medical personnel listed above are trained!

    13. Evacuation Team Leader Security Bessie Lyles Teresa Prestridge Coordinates Teacher assignments Double checks classroom coverage Leads evacuation efforts Runners All Staff on Planning / Duty Period Coordinates with Counselors Notify teachers / students outside of building Check restrooms for students

    14. Off Campus Evacuations All off campus evacuations will be issued by the school administrator(s) in accordance with the Huntsville City School Policy. If teachers and students are in the building they will exit the building as if it were a fire drill. The evacuation may be issued after everyone is already stationed outside. When an off campus evacuation is issued, teachers and staff from Chapman Middle will escort their students to Chapman Avenue and walk east on Chapman Ave. to the corner of Penhall Dr. They will turn left onto Penhall Dr. There they will wait for instructions from the school administrators or emergency personnel.

    15. Off Campus Evacuations Continued Chapman Elementary teachers and staff will direct their students to Wakefield Drive and walk east to Pettus Drive. They will turn right onto Pettus Drive and then left into the community pool parking lot. There they will station in the open field between the church and the community pool, and wait for instructions from the school administrations or emergency personnel.
