  1. Plants

  2. 1. Plants • Plants are multicellular, eukaryiotic, photosynthetic autotrophs that have a cell wall made of cellulose • Plants have organ systems that have similar functions to animal systems

  3. 2. Shoot and Root Systems • Shoot system is above ground and includes organs such as leaves, buds, stems, flowers and fruits • Functions • Photosythesis • Reporduction • Storage • Transport • Hormone production

  4. 2. Shoot and Root Systems • Root system is below ground and includes, roots, tubers and rhizomes • Functions: • Anchorage • Absorption • Storage • transport

  5. 3. Tissue • Dermal tissue covers a plant. • Vascular tissue forms a system of pipelike cells that support the plant and serve to transport water and nutrients. • Ground tissue produces and stores food.

  6. 4. Flowers • Flowers are the major reproductive organs of plants. Flowers give rise to fruits and seeds. • Fruit is a ripened ovary that developes after fertilization. • Ovules – seeds • Ovary wall - fruit

  7. 5. Vascular System • System of tubes running through the plant body that transports nutrients, minerals and water between the plant cells. • Xylem – transports water and minerals absorbed by roots to other regions of the plant. • Phloem – transports sugar from the leaves to other regions of the plant.

  8. 6. Leaves • Leaves are the photosynthetic organ of a plant. • Leaves are flat to capture light and thin to allow light to penetrate • Leaves may be adapted for: • Storage • Protection
