  1. Bell-Ringer(complete in your composition book) • Decide if each of the 6 questions on the bottom of your handout are testable or not. • If not testable, rewrite the question to make it testable. • You will have 7 minutes to complete this task.

  2. Monday Sept 12, 2011 OBJECTIVES: AGENDA Review Scientific Process Review 4 step process for writing your own testable question HOMEWORK Using the 4 step process write 3 more testable questions for the pillbug experiment • Identify testable questions from non-testable questions • Write a testable question

  3. Scientific ProcessWhere are we? • Select topic • Gather background information about topic • Write questions/select a testable question

  4. Pair Share Directions • With your table partner, discuss if each of the 6 questions on the bottom of your handout are testable or not. Compare your answers. • You have 3 minutes to complete this task.

  5. Testable or Not? • How is bug blood different from human blood? • Yes!

  6. Testable or Not? 2. Why do your fingers wrinkle after you take a bath? What wrinkles your fingers faster, salt or freshwater? How long does it take your fingers to wrinkle in water?

  7. Testable or Not? 3. Is rock music better than hip hop music? How many people at Kenwood prefer rock music over hip hop? What effect does the genre of music have on your ability to concentrate?

  8. Testable or Not? 4. Why does bright light cause someone to sneeze? Does bright light cause some people to sneeze? Does the intensity of light cause some people to sneeze?

  9. Testable or Not? 5. Do smells affect people’s moods?

  10. Testable or Not? 6. Is vegetarianism better than eating meat? What is the effect of a meat vs. vegetable diet on your blood pressure?

  11. Now that you have identified testable from non-testable questions, the next step is……

  12. How do I write my own testable question? Ask your 4 questions. (The 4 Step Process)

  13. 1. What materials are readily available to conduct an experiment on pillbugs? • Scales • Thermometers • Beakers • pH paper • Colored paper • Water • Vinegar • Heat lamps • Graduated cylinders

  14. 2. How do pillbugs act? • Roll up in ball • Drink from anus • Hide under rocks • Eat their own poop • Breathe through gills • Crawl • Shed their skin • Carry eggs in brood pouch • Turn blue when sick

  15. 3. How can you change the set of materials in #1 to affect the action in #2? Water • Temp • Quantity • Foreign substance • pH Light • Temperature • Amount (intensity) • Direction • color Beaker • Size • Contents • Clean Paper • Type • Color • material • Size • texture

  16. 4. How can you measure the response of the pillbug to the changes in #3? • Time them • Measure their length • How fast they role up • How fast they crawl • Measure their shape/size

  17. Let’s write our testable question… Format: How does (pick a change in #3) affect (pick an action in #2)? Example: How does the type of paper affect the speed of the pillbug?

  18. Homework • Write 3 more testable pillbug questions using the 4 step process on looseleaf.

  19. Bell-ringer • Choose one of the 3 testable questions you wrote for homework about pillbugs • Write that question that you are interested in testing on the little strip of paper • Go through the “testable question” checklist to determine if your question is testable

  20. Tuesday Sept 13, 2011 OBJECTIVES: • Develop a testable question for the pill bug lab • Determine the features of a hypothesis • Determine the features of a well written procedure AGENDA: • Testable question for pill bug lab • Review how to write a hypothesis • Review how to write a procedure HOMEWORK: • Write a procedure on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

  21. The Process of Scientific Inquiry Topic Selection Get to know your topic better Choose a testable question to answer Predict the answer (Hypothesis)

  22. Writing a hypothesis Independent Variable (what you are changing) Dependent variable (what you are measuring) "If _____[I do this] _____, then _____[this ]_____ will happen, because… • A educated guess about what is going to happen • It’s an educated guess because you have already completed your background research • Keep the variables in mind. The dependant and independent variables should be clearly stated • Make sure your hypothesis is "testable.“ • A hypothesis explains why you anticipate the outcome you have stated

  23. Example of hypothesis "If a plant receives fertilizer, then it will grow to be bigger than a plant that does not receive fertilizer. This is likely to happen because… What are the independent and dependant variables? Independent variable = Dependent variable =

  24. Re-write this into a hypothesis Ladybugs are a good natural pesticide for treating aphid infected plants. Hypothesis: If I treat the plants with ladybugs, then the number of aphids will decrease because ladybugs are good natural pesticides.

  25. Let’s practice writing a hypothesis to our testable question!

  26. Directions for Independent Work • Write a hypothesis under the testable question you chose for the bell-ringer on the small strip of paper • You have 3 minutes to complete this task.

  27. Group Work Directions In groups of 3, • Select one of the questions & hypotheses you wrote on the slip of paper Would you consider it to be a “testable question”? Why or why not? • Turn that question into a testable question and write it on a sheet of looseleaf with all your names • Explain how that question qualifies as a testable question • Turn your group’s testable question and hypothesis in to me for review. • You have 5 minutes to complete this task.

  28. The Process of Scientific Inquiry Topic Selection Get to know your topic better Choose a testable question to answer Develop a way to answer the question (Procedure) Predict the answer (Hypothesis)

  29. Writing Procedures 1. Should be very specific, telling the person exactly what to do. (The reader should be able to complete the experiment by reading your directions). 2. Steps should be written in complete sentences and numbered in sequential order. 3. Should be written in the 2nd person as if you are talking to the reader.

  30. Summary • How would identify the dependantand independent variable in an experiment? Homework • Write a procedure for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich

  31. Bell-ringer(with your table partner, 5 minutes) • Read your partner’s procedure for making a PB & J sandwich and do EXACTLY what they say, pretend like you are making the sandwich. • When finished, answer this question in your composition book: Did you find it easy or difficult to follow your partner’s directions? Explain why.

  32. Wednesday September 14, 2011 OBJECTIVES: • Learn the features of a well-written procedure • Write a detailed procedure for your experiment AGENDA: • discuss BR • Review features of a procedure • Begin writing procedure HOMEWORK: • Finish writing procedure for pillbug experiment

  33. Let’s try out some of your peanut butter and jelly procedures!

  34. Writing Procedures 1. Should be very specific, telling the person exactly what to do. (The reader should be able to complete the experiment by reading your directions). 2. Steps should be written in complete sentences and numbered in sequential order. 3. Should be written in the 2nd person as if you are talking to the reader.

  35. Let’s begin writing a procedure for your pill bug experiment!

  36. Group Directions(20 minutes) • Make revisions to your TESTABLE QUESTION and HYPOTHESIS if needed. • In your composition books, work with your other group members to write a detailed step by step PROCEDURE for your pill bug experiment. Be sure to list the MATERIALS you need. • When you are finished, show your MATERIALS & PROCEDURE to your teacher for approval. • You need APPROVAL before conducting your experiment. • Hand your teacher a half sheet of paper with all your names and the MATERIALS you need.

  37. SUMMARY (half sheet of paper) • What are key things to keep in mind when writing procedures for an experiment? HOMEWORK: • Finish writing the procedure for your pillbug lab. Make revisions to your procedure if needed.
