  9. web mapsthe base of your maps/apps/tools The web map is where it all starts! Adding content (yours or other publicly shared content) is how to get started.

  10. web mapsbecoming web applications Once your layers are added and configured, save your map, then share it.

  13. Web apps empower their users! Once your application(s) are built, can you start to share them out to your end user(s). They can be shared in various ways… • URL (web address) • QR Codes • Share within ArcGIS Online group • Share as a link on/embed into website • Share a group (with multiple apps within it)/Embed group into website

  14. Applications can serve many purposes! Applications specifically built for a focused audience

  15. Collecting information from the public Crowdsourcing information, GIS data from the public!

  20. Open Data Sharing data with…everyone!

  21. Keeping it all running GIS is an ecosystem, you must maintain it • Any data that is kept in GIS must be either upkept and current, or tagged as project data (metadata is so important) • If your web environment is separate from your working data (it should be), updates must be run periodically • Staff must be trained properly • Software must be kept current • If GIS data is publicly facing, it gets MANY critiques! • Some information may not be public • double check before you release it!

  22. Benefits a-Plenty Serving our GIS data to the public has many benefits • Many sets of eyes on the data • Reduced phone/foot traffic requesting information • More productive staff • Ease of use for citizens • Reduction of operating costs • Better decisions based on data • More engaged customers/citizens • Data available to many more individuals than before • New ways to visualize your information
