  2. Naming Alkanes • 1. Find the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms. This is your parent chain • This longest chain may not be written in a straight line. • Place a box around the parent chain • 2. Name the parent chain with the appropriate alkane name.

  3. Naming Alkanes • 3. Find the branches and name each of them with the appropriate group name. • Place circles around branches • 4. Number the carbons in the chain so that the branches are on the lowest possible numbers.

  4. 5. List the groups alphabetically in front of the longest chain name. • 6. Place the number where the branch is found in front of the name • 7. If there are more than one of a group, use a prefix (di, tri, tetra) to indicate how many
