  1. Arachnoid Cysts - Symptoms Overview An arachnoid cyst occurs inside the arachnoid membrane, one of the three meninges or layers of the brain. It’s also where it gets its name. However, arachnoid cyst can also develop around the spinal cord. Arachnoid cysts grow between your brain and skull or in pockets around your brain called ventricles. Arachnoid cysts are usually filled withcerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is a naturally occurring protective fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal column.The walls of an arachnoid cyst don’t allow this fluid to drain into your CSF system, causing it to accumulate inside. Arachnoid cysts are of two types: Primary arachnoid cysts are usually congenital and present by birth, secondary arachnoid cysts develop in people later on in life. Primary arachnoid cysts are more common than secondary cysts.

  2. Symptoms Arachnoid cysts don’t usually tend to cause symptoms. Consequently, people who have arachnoid cysts don’t usually realize it until they are examined by chance, for example when they have a head injury. In some cases, however, arachnoid cysts do cause symptoms. This happens usually when a cyst presses on nerves or sensitive areas of your brain or spinal cord. Arachnoid cysts in the brain can cause symptoms like: Headache Dizziness Nausea Vomiting Lethargy Seizures Problems hearing, seeing, or walking Balance issues Developmental delay Dementia When located in the spine, arachnoid cysts can cause symptoms such as: Back pain Scoliosis Muscle weakness or spasms Lack of feeling or tingling in the arms or legs
