  1. Sociocultural Level of Analysis GLO 2 EgalWarsame and Ayat Ahmad

  2. Principle 1 • Human Beings are social animals and we have a basic need to “belong” • Baumeister and Leary ( 1995) • “need to belong” is innate • Humans have a need to form maintain interpersonal relationships and group memberships • Explain • This relates to the Principle because the “need to belong” is innate meaning its natural for people to have the need to belong. • Discussion

  3. Principle 2 • Social and Culture environments influences behaviour • Hofstede’s pioneering research (1984) • Looked at the work-related attitudes and values of IBM employees from 40 different countries • Founded that there is 5 dimensions of Culture (Individualism and Collectivism) • Individualist culture- Personal Characteristics • Collectivistic Culture- Characteristics of a Collective group • Ross et al ( 1977) • College students were randomly assigned to either a questioner and answerers • Explain • This relates to the principle because in the experiment they found that people assumed that the questioner was smarter not because they made up their own questions but because they were the questioners

  4. Principle 3 • Humans are social animals, they have a social self • People need a personal identity and social one • Social identity theory ( Tajfel, 1979 ) • Social identity- is a persons sense of who they are based on their group membership • People’s groups gave them a sense of pride and self-esteem • Social Categorization • “In” vs “Out” group

  5. Principle 4 • People’s views of the world are resistant to change World view • The way the world is understood • Being from Brixton • The people from Brixton believed that the people from Brixton were the better than people outside of Brixton • Leon Festinger et al.’s When Prophecy Fails (1956) • Religious cult believed that the world would end December 21 • Believed that flying saucers would come and rescue them • Festinger became part of the cult to study the people • At midnight of December 20 and nothing happened some people still waited believing that one clock said 11:55 so there was still time • Explain • This relates to the principle because even though nothing happened on December 21 the people were still resistant to change their ways or views of the world. Also in the Being Brixton case people did not want to change their view of others not from Brixton.

  6. Pop Quiz • Which experiment or theory was used to explain the Principle 3? • Tajfel, 1979 • Ross et al ( 1977) • Baumeister and Leary ( 1995) • Leon Festinger et al.’s When Prophecy Fails (1956) • What were the 2 main dimensions of culture?
