Civil Rights Acts • Continued JFK’s move towards civil rights • Civil Rights Act of 1964 – banned racial discrimination on most private facilities open to public • Strengthened fed. gov’t’s power to end segregation in schools • Title VII – EEOC – barred employment based on race • Voting Rights Act of 1965 – outlawed literacy tests and sent federal voter registrars into several southern states • Due to Freedom Summer in Mississippi and “Selma to Montgomery” in Bama • Civil Rights Act of 1968 – no discrimination in public housing • 24th Amendment – no more poll taxes

(TVA, SS) • Against income tax, civil rights, and nuclear test bans • Believed in brinkmanship • LBJ • Great Society Platform • Tonkin Gulf Resolution • NV attacked US ships in Vietnam • Congress withdrew right to declare war and handed it to the POTUS • LANDSLIDE

Great Society • LBJ’s Domestic program • New Deal type economic and welfare measures • Had Democratic majority in both houses • “War on Poverty” – eradicating poverty • $2-3 billion • Head Start Program – provided educational, nutritional, and social services to low income families • 2 new cabinet positions • Transportation • Housing and urban Development (HUD)

Great Society Contd • Entitlement Programs • Medicare – medical care for the elderly • Medicaid – medical care for the elderly • Food Stamp Act • Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 • Abolished “National-origins” quotas • Doubled the # of imm that could enter US • Result – imm. from Latin Amer. And Asia

  10. Continued… it keeps going • Elementary and Secondary Education Act - $1 biilion in fed aid to schools • Special Education • Job Corps – provided job training to to low-income students • Public Broadcasting

  11. What happened? • VIETNAM!!!! • Sucked money out of domestic programs • LBJ= unpopular • Does not run in 1968
