  1. Cornell Notes are used: • to help take organized notes • to help identify keywords & concepts from a lecture or reading • to help scan notes to locate important info.

  2. Set Up • ÷ paper into 2 sections by drawing vertical line from top to bottom a few inches from left margin.

  3. Label Paper • Write your name, course, & date at the top of each page • Write a general title for the lecture • Examples: • Chapter 3 Lit. • Am. Revolution • Parts of a cell…

  4. Write Notes • Write all main ideas/concepts on right side of page • Be sure to skip 1 line btwn. ideas & several lines btwn. topics • Mark ideas that go together with an asterisk *

  5. Key Points • Pull out main ideas, topics, terms, places, dates…from right column of your notes • Write these key points in left column, matching it with notes • Example:

  6. Review and clarify • Review notes soon after lecture • Make sure notes are clear & info. makes sense • You still have time to clarify w/ book or teacher

  7. Summarize • At bottom of page write a summary • Mention all key points

  8. Study • Use both columns of your notes to study for tests • Fold the paper lengthwise & quiz your friend or yourself by covering answers
