Sardegna Ricerche STP R&D in Sardinia A joint initiative of the regional Governement of Sardinia and the European Union to foster the island’s economic development through technological innovation and knowledge, the STP provides facilities and services for the location of innovative enterprises and research centres. Opened in july 2003, the Park now hosts 50 companies and research centres, for a total of more than 400 working in the sectors of ICT’s, Biomedicine, Bioinformatics and Renewable EnergySources

Sardegna Ricerche STP The two main centres are at Pula and Alghero, respectively managed by Sardegna Ricerche, the regional agency promoting the island’s economic development by focusing on technological innovation, and Porto Conte Ricerche. Sardegna Ricerche was established in 1985 with the name of Consorzio Ventuno • Mission • to assist the Regional Government to implement R&D policies • to manage and promote the Regional Science & Technology Park • to develop programmes and projects for innovation, research and technology • to transform the results of research into new business initiatives

The S & T Park • Two centres in Pula and Alghero in the midst of nature parks of outstanding environmental value Each centre focuses on different science-technology areas: • The local branch in Alghero (Sassari) • Industrial biotech, in particular: • Proteomics • Nanobiotechnologies • Agrifood technologies • Biodiversity and the Environment • The HQ in Pula (Cagliari) • ICTs • Biomedicine Bioinformatics • Renewable Energy sources

The STP makes available to companies and research centers multifunctional spaces, equipped laboratories, reception, logistic and general services, as well as advisory and support services. • Main services • intellectual property and patenting services • technology transfer services • HR training and management services • Communication and marketing services • assistance in company startup, spin-off and incubation • assistance in planning projects and advice on innovation financing

HQ of Pula a green area of 160 hectares, 5 buildings, with offices, labs, a services center, meeting rooms, a conference hall seating 140, a cafeteria, training classrooms, security systems and a fiberoptic network. Alghero-Tramariglio branch: an area of 3.5 ha, 17 km far from Alghero-Fertilia airport Owned by the University of Sassari, the complex comprises some 10,000 m2 of indoor areas, with three buildings surrounded by greenery and served by spacious parking areas. Two buildings house labs, offices, plant & equipment, the library, meeting rooms and a videoconferencing room and classrooms; the third building comprises the auditorium, guest quarters and a cafeteria. The branch is managed by PORTO CONTE RICERCHE, a company controlled by Sardegna Ricerche (www.portocontericerche.it). The branch hosts 13 companies and organizations, with a total staff of some 50 people.

Technological Platforms • The STP is also equipped with state-of-the-art facilities: • a Bioinformatics Laboratory • a Genotyping and Gene Expression Profiling Laboratory • a Pharmacology Laboratory • a prototyping center (Proto 21) • IT and Telecommunications Laboratory • prototyping and Medical Devices Laboratory • an Innovative Food Technologies Laboratory* • a Proteomic Biotechnology Laboratory* • a NMR Spectrometry Laboratory and an Analytical Chemistry Laboratory* • a Microbial Biotechnologies Laboratory* *at the local branch in Alghero-Tramariglio

The ICT Cluster The creation of the ICT cluster is motivated by the nucleus of scientific, technological and managerial competences that since the 90’s has been developed in Sardinia and has in Tiscali and CRS4 its most important testimonials. With a budget of 21 million euros, the cluster will run 3 metaprograms which are devoted to create 9 technological laboratories where all the activities and the scientific and technology competencies of enterprises, universities and research centres will converge. • Objectives • Create a critical mass of highly competitive enterprises • Attract scientific and technology excellence • Elaborate advanced applications

The 90s were key years for the development of the new economy in the island. 1991 Nobel Laureate Carlo Rubbia create CRS4 (supercomputing R&D Centre) 1992 www.crs4.it is the first Italian website 1993-1994 Unione Sarda becomes the first online newspaper worldwide 1995 Video On Line is the first ISP in Italy 1997 Tiscali becomes the symbol of ICTs in Sardinia

Main Outputs - Sardinia ranks 6thin the listing of Italian regions with highest biotech company density (Assobiotec - Blossom Ass.ti 2007). - 3 pharmaceutical/medical device manufacturing companies have been created in Sardinia, (first industrial results) - 50companies and some 400people are now operating in the Park; - 3foreign biotech companies located into the park (Sweden, UK and Switzerland); - 9Italian researchers (including 7 from Sardinia) have returned from mainland Italy or foreign countries (USA, Sweden, UK, etc.) to work in companies located into the Park.
