Judaism Fion Yi • How did this religion start? • Began in 1300 BCE or earlier • One of oldest religions • Oldest religion to worship one God • Leaders and Important people that created the religion • No single founder • Many prophets and leaders • Abraham and Moses are important people in creating the religion • Isaac and Jacob (son of Isaac)=second and third founders • First Jew=Abraham • Abraham lived in Middle East where people worshipped many Gods • Began when Abraham worshipped one God • God told Abraham and Sarah (wife) to leave Mesopotamia and go to Israel • Moses led out Jewish slaves inout of Egypt (told by God); also given 613 Commandments by God

How do they practice their religion? • Can pray at any time • Special prayers • Men wear Yamulka • Go to Synagogues– special place for worshipping on Sundays • Use prayer book • Can use their own words • Singing a special prayer • Pray in a mixture of Hebrew • Eat apples which are dipped into honey • Jews prepare food for Shabbat(Most important festival) • Clean house for Shabbat • Certain food they must not eat: Beef (open-hoofed animal) • Pray for forgiveness • Everyone wears special cloth ex. Tallit, Tefillin, Kippah By Hongjun Kim

  4. The Tanach is the holy book • The Tanach consists of 3 books 1) the 5 books of torah (laws) 2)the 8 books of the nvi’im(history plus prophets) • 3)the 11 books of the k’tuim(hymns, stories) • Torah is the main book By Molly Lorette

  5. What makes the torah so important? -Their stories say that the torah was given from god, through Moses. - They believe the torah is god’s word! - -People say that the torah is a guide book to hope • -every copy of the torah is handwritten, never printed By Molly Lorette

Believe that god controls nature & history You cannot steal Do not murder Don’t tell lies Don’t be jealous Laws can be changed by gods First day of creation god made night & day Heaven was made on the second day Seas, land and what grows on land where created on the 3rd day On the 5th day, fish and birds where created On the sixth day gods, people and land animals where made Jews do not believe that god is messiah God controls nature & history Do not have any other god Evil will be punished Good will be rewarded By Jeremy Mills
