  4. What is Image Quality

  5. Resolution A measure of how many pixels fit into a given space. Measured in DPI or PPI.

  6. Resolution • To maintain quality; • Set camera to highest quality • Be careful when resizing in PS • Use suitable monitor resolution • Use a printer with high DPi

  7. Resampling No Resampling Resampling

  8. Working Resolutions • Books/Magazines: 260 to 450 dpi • Newspaper: 135 to 150 dpi • General: 300dpi

  9. File Formats • RAW • JPG • TIFF • PSD

  10. File Formats RAW Image recorded by camera sensor before any compression or processing is applied.

  11. File Formats JPG Joint Photographic Experts Group. Developed as a standard to maintain quality of photographic images in digital format. Is a compression format (lossy)

  12. JPG Compression Artifacts

  13. File Formats TIFF Tagged Image File Format. Reduces image size but maintains quality. Is a compression format (lossless)

  14. File Formats PSD Photoshop format. Maintains separate level information.

  15. RAW Format Records exactly what the camera sensor is seeing. Known as a Digital Negative. RAW files need to be processed before you can work on them or view them on other devices.

  16. RAW Format Different models of cameras have different extensions for RAW format files………. Nikon: NEF Fuji: RAF Canon: CRW Sony: ARW Olympus: ORF

  17. RAW Format - Pros Quality. Being able to change variables yourself; white balance, brightness, contrast , saturation, and sharpness, allows the photographer to achieve a higher quality end result. Control. This also means you have more artistic control over your images.

  18. RAW Format - Cons Size. RAW files are a lot larger so use up more space on you cameras card, and computers hard disk, and will slow down your image editing software. Time consuming. You need to process each photo manually to get an image you can start working on.

  19. RAW Processing Demonstration

  20. Tutorial Exercises Work through the tutorials on Resolution & RAW Processing. These are available on x-stream or under H:\Tpartington\PJ\Image Processing\ Week 1\ Look at applying these techniques to your own images.
