What is TropLinks Inc? • TropLinks Inc is an independent, not for profit incorporated association • Though not a government body, will be supported by Qld Govt first 3 years on a decreasing basis annually • Must be self-sustaining at end of 3 years through fee for service, membership fees, success fees etc • Will join with WA and NT to be Nth Australian initiative with international linkages

Membership Basis: Those with a desire to develop, commercialise and export tropical expertise (science, knowledge and innovation) • Is membership-based and include: • Businesses and industry groups • Research bodies • Educational Institutions • Membership will be fee-based • TropLinks is a key mechanism in Qld Govt Tropical Expertise Strategy 2008-2012 • Diverse Board

Vision and Mission Statement Vision • To grow the Tropical Economy of Australia Mission Statement TropLinks will maximise the capacity to develop, commercialise and export Tropical Expertise (science, knowledge and innovation) in: • Tropical Environmental Services • Tropical Agriculture • Tropical Health • Tropical Living (including built environment, education, tourism, services to mining)

  5. Services to Members Assistance with Critical Issues for Nth. Australia: • Business matching/Opportunity Identification: especially collaborative bids/alliances (TropLinks will assume role at completion of current contract) • Stakeholder engagement: build critical mass • Identity and branding • Lobbying and coordination • Funding and capital raising: investment for projects, industry development

International Markets (1) Projects and commercial opportunities • Aid/development funded e.g. ADB, WB, AusAID, ACIAR, UNDP • Direct to industry e.g. mining services, cattle • Opportunities will be project-based but geographically, targets will be Sth East Asia, northern and southern Pacific • Typical Opportunities: PNG LNG project, Guam, Energy in the Pacific

International Markets (2) Commercialisation of Innovation • Most funding will come from highly developed economies such as the US, UK and Europe so these would be the primary targets. • The domestic Australian market will also be an important source through innovation funds, private investors etc.

International Markets (3) Philanthropic Funding • Most philanthropic funding comes from highly developed economies especially the US so this is the primary target • Certain amount of funding arising in Sth East Asia where rich individuals are putting funds into projects in areas such as environment Research Funding • Most funding will come from highly developed economies such as the US, UK and Europe so these would be the primary targets.

  9. Membership of TropLinks It’s All About Linkages and Partnerships • Establish greater national and international linkages • 119 members at 25.11.09 with concerted membership drive starting soon • Free membership currently

  10. Membership of TropLinks Proposed Membership Fee Structure For a 12 month membership – • 1-5 employees (FTE’s) $175 • 6-25 employees $295 • Over 25 employees $550 • Public institutions $850

To Date • CEO on-board July 20, 2009 • Office now established at 212 McLeod St, Cairns • Finalisation of Strategic Plan • Research/Admin Officer on-board Dec 03, 2009 The Future • Feb 2010: Hiring of Business Development Executive • Trade Missions: First quarter 2010 and on-going • Late 2010: Torrid Zone/Tropical Expertise International Forum • Establishment of partner “satellite offices” domestic and international on on-going basis
