  2. My Background: • Graduated with BA (Hons) War Studies • Course Representative 2008-09 academic year • Students’ Union Academic Vice President 2009-10 • Institute for Learning Enhancement Graduate Attributes Project Worker • Quality Assistant, ASQ (Registry)

  3. Becoming a Course Rep • Volunteered during my third year of study, out of curiosity and as a CV ‘boost’ • Lecturer asked for volunteers • Didn’t realise the potential of volunteering at the time • My own knowledge of the Student Voice System was minimal

  4. My Volunteering • What did I do? • Attended University meetings and committees • Liaised with students and other Course/School Reps, then fed back views and opinions to the University • Met with academic staff to discuss any course or module problems brought up by students • Helped with Students’ Union campaigns

My Volunteering • What did I learn? • How to communicate effectively with different audiences • How to successfully negotiate and express ideas • Gained wider knowledge of University processes and structures • Meeting/Committee etiquette • The ability to accurately and effectively gather information from a large body of people • How to identify and solve problems • How to work effectively as part of a team and independently

  7. On reflection… • Volunteering can lead you anywhere… • It’s a stepping stone! • Skills are transferable… • It gave me ‘value added’ and boosted my employability • Built networks of contacts within the University
