Decreasing Undesirable Behaviors • Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible and Other Behaviors • Reinforcing a positive behavior that is incompatible with the negative behavior • Extinction • To extinguish a behavior, you stop reinforcing it • Removing Reinforcers • Removal punishment – taking away something from the student that is desired • Response cost – taking away a privilege or some other reward • Time-out • Presenting Negative Consequences • Presentation punishment – involves presenting negative consequences to students • Overcorrection • Physical punishment • The latter two strategies are considered punishment

How Can You Help Students Manage Their Own Behavior? • Cognitive Behavior Management (CBM) • Students are taught to monitor their own behavior, make judgments about its appropriateness, and change as needed • Self-monitoring • Self-reinforcement • Teaching Cognitive Behavior Management Strategies • Discuss the strategy with the student and present a rationale for its use • Model for the student what you expect • Provide practice and feedback
