  2. Non Fiction • prose writing that presents and explains ideas or tells about real people, places, ideas, or events • Prose: any piece of writing that is not poetry.

  3. Non Fiction Terms to know • Formal: Writing that is standard in reading and writing: for example. “We would like to cordially invite you and a guest to our wedding. Please RSVP by …” • Informal: Writing that is not typically standard but may consist of a more relaxed style: for example: “We are hav’n a big bash y’all, come for da fun.”

  4. Connotation vs Denotation • Connotation of a word is the set of ideas associated with it in addition to its tone or meaning. • For example: hate, biased, insincere • Denotationof a word is its definition meaning.

  5. Auto vs Bio • Autobiography: is a form of nonfiction in which a writer tells his or her own life story • Biography: a form of nonfiction in which a writer tells the life story of another person

  6. Description • Description: a portrait in words of a person, place, or object • Concrete: touch, smell, taste, see, hear, • Purple mountain majesty • Amber waves of grain • Sea to shining sea • Abstract: what you can not touch, hear, see, etc. • Love • Hate • Feelings

  7. Essays • a short nonfiction work about a particular subject • Narrative • Expository • Persuasive

  8. Essays • Narrative: tells a true story. • Expository: gives information, discusses ideas, or explains a process. • Persuasive: tries to convince reader to do something or to accept the writer's point of view.

  9. Paradox • a statement that seems contradictory but that actually may be true • For example: “I know that I know nothing.” Or, “ Am I dreaming.”

  10. Subjective vs Objective • Subjective: writing based on author's opinions Biased • Objective: writing based on facts only Unbiased
